2020.09.18 22:18 mebungholeCan anyone recommend some JW-like movies? What movies remind you of JW?
Here are some of mine: 1.) Collateral (2004): I consider this to be a JW prototype and I believe without this movie JW wouldn't exist. 2.) The Raid 2 (2014): A real fight fest. It came out the same year as the first JW movie and it blew me away. Its got that edge-of-your-seat/never-a-dull-moment quality just like the JW movies. Also, Yayan Ruhian & Cepcep Arif Rahman appear in the third film fighting Keanu Reeves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIPzpnFIZJM 3.) Smokin' Aces (2007): It's a corny movie but it also has that visceral feeling like the JW movies. It's almost as though the bullets are flying past you. 4.) Deadpool 1&2: Not as badass as the JW movies and these are movies that don't take themselves too seriously and that's okay. Still Deadpool practices Gun Fu just like John and once again there's never a dull moment. Argue with me. 5.) El Chicano (2019): Watching this movie reminded me so much of the first JW movie. El Chicano is basically Mexican Batman.
2020.09.18 21:31 SwordOfTheMoonBleach was never a dead series
There has been a notion going on for quite a while now that during the period between some time after the anime had ended and the time that it was announced to be coming back recently that the series was overall dead in Japan and just in general. Some might no longer think this with recent events, but some still might think that the series was indeed dead for a time and that this is a revival from something that had nothing going for it for a long time. This is false, since what had been happening with the series that entire time most certainly does not qualify as something that no one cared about and the points that were usually brought up to argue that it was are going to be addressed in this post. Bleach Anime Sales: Merchandise (charabiz 2010-2012): Billion Yen/Million Dollars 2010: 19.4 / 162.7 2011: 16.1 / 135.1 2012: 15.3 / 128.4 http://dvdbd.wiki.fc2.com/wiki/Bleach When it comes to the manga, it should be compared to the industry average (which it was outperforming) and other titles in Jump and Shueisha. It wasn’t just Bleach, LOTS of series declined in sales. That 2009-10 dip is a period when the manga industry crashed for a time, it's where the industry decline really kicked into high gear. All the manga that were around suffered a corresponding crash in sales. Some recovered better than others, but I don't think any reached the sales figures they had before the 2009-10 period. It doesn’t matter how much Bleach or any series used to sell, what matters is how well it sells now. The volumes, even in its final days, were published during the busiest publication week would slide into the charts in first or second place (it's almost always the top placed new entry for its week, and its second/third week sales still beat many new entries for those subsequent weeks, too), and then stays in the top 50 charts for about four weeks. One mustn't do what most do, which is compare Bleach's later sales to it's peak sales - if one does that, no manga comes out looking good. And it didn't keep declining, it was in a state of stagnation in what was a good spot in terms of sales and rankings. In 2012 it sold 2,974,750 copies. In 2013 it sold 2,752,588 copies. In 2014 it sold 2,986,968 copies. In 2015 it sold 2,818,926 copies. In 2016 it sold 2,253,028 copies. Bleach is ranked 17th in the top selling manga in Japan of all time, and when you count the ones only from Shueisha and Jump its their 8th best seller. In 2012 it ranked 12th, and when you count the ones from Shueisha its ranked 8th, counting the ones only from Jump its 7th. In 2013 it ranked 15th, and when you count the ones from Shueisha its ranked 11th, counting the ones only from Jump its 8th. In 2014 it ranked 18th, and when you count the ones from Shueisha its ranked 10th, counting the ones only from Jump its 7th. In 2015 it ranked 21st, and when you count the ones from Shueisha its ranked 14th, counting the ones only from Jump its 7th. In 2016 it ranked 17th, and when you count the ones from Shueisha its ranked 10th, counting the ones only from Jump its 6th. A series that continues to rank in the middle of the yearly top 30 best selling manga list with a little under 3,000,000 sales and ranks around 6th or 7th in Jumps lineup isn’t a series thats doing poorly. And for it to be doing that well without an anime during that time is pretty impressive. The reason it sold less numbers in 2016 is because it released one less volume than the previous two years and if it had another volume release like those did it would have been at the same level (plus it still ranked higher than its previous years). In its final years it continued to outsell Gintama and come close to other series that were considered to be very successful. In terms of other material while the manga was ongoing it had a mobile game that was a continued good success. Throughout its run it continued to sell well to the very end and this is only Japan. Bleach had a fanbase and a readership from all over the world. Once a series ends things get quiet and since the ending we’ve had: Novels that sold very well A live action film (got awards) Artbook sold 37.5k on pre-orders alone with a 150$+ price tag Burn The Witch Oneshot with a note at the end that said they were not done with the world of bleach yet Brave Souls reached 45million downloads and brings in monthly revenue of at least 10 million Anime is coming back with a new spin off serialization Art exhibition next year Ichigo v Ulquiorra Figurama figure sold out in 4 hours, 1300 copies of a $950+ work of art, making a new record It was never a dead series.

With the drop of the first trailer last week, I’ve seen a lot of chatter on Reddit and elsewhere regarding Dune’s box office chances. If you go to boxoffice, there are a lot of posters who see this movie as the next John Carter. The general consensus from naysayers has been that the movie looks bland, overly serious, its plot is overdone/stale, and that it lacks any real box office stars. What the naysayers overlook, however, is that some of the sci-fi flops they cite as examples had weaknesses that the upcoming adaptation does not have. For example, in the case of some recent flops, the movies had no major stars (Valerian) or the movie was critically panned (Jupiter Ascending). That got me wondering how movies similar to Dune over the past decade fared at the box office. Below, I’ve summarized the box office performance of the best examples I could find and have placed them into three categories. Category 1 -- Critical and Commercial Flop 1. John Carter (2012) Metacritic Score: 51 Rotten Tomatoes: 52% Box Office: $284 million $73 million domestic $211 million international 2. Jupiter Ascending (2015) Metacritic Score: 40 Rotten Tomatoes: 27% Box Office: $184 million $47 million domestic $137 million international 3. Ender’s Game (2015) Metacritic Score: 51 Rotten Tomatoes: 62% Box Office: $126 million $62 million domestic $64 million international Commentary: John Carter and Ender’s Game are the most similar to Dune as both are based on well-known books (though both do not arguably have Dune’s influence). The common denominator with all of these movies is they were critical failures, which translated to commercial failure as well, despite having some well-known actors in their casts (I did not include Valerian as that movie essentially starred two lesser known actors). Category 2 -- Critical Success, Muted Commercial Success 1. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) Metacritic Score: 81 Rotten Tomatoes: 88% Box Office: $259 million $93 million domestic $167 million international 2. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Metacritic Score: 90 Rotten Tomatoes: 97% Box Office: $375 million $154 million domestic $221 million international 3. Edge of Tomorrow Metacritic Score: 71 Rotten Tomatoes: 91% Box Office: $370 million $100 million domestic $270 million international Commentary: It’s arguable whether Blade Runner 2049 belongs in the same category as Mad Max or Edge of Tomorrow, both of which are movies that do have sequels in development. That being said, neither Mad Max nor Edge of Tomorrow did huge business at the box office, and they had comparable budgets to Dune. On the flip side, Dune should be more action packed and contains a more straightforward story (relatively speaking) than Blade Runner 2049. Category 3 -- Critical Success AND Commercial Success 1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) Metacritic Score: 79 Rotten Tomatoes: 90% Box Office: $710 million $208 million domestic $502 million international 2. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) Metacritic Score: 82 Rotten Tomatoes: 94% Box Office: $490 million $146 million domestic $343 million international 3. Inception (2010) Metacritic Score: 74 Rotten Tomatoes: 87% Box Office: $834 million $292 million domestic $544 million international Commentary: I think the Apes movies are a pretty good point of comparison for Dune. Both movies are probably bleaker than Dune, but they were definitely adult sci-fi and based on a well-known, though dormant movie franchise (and book, too). Inception does not really share much in common with Dune, but it is the kind of success that Dune could realistically achieve. Key Takeaways: · Critical success is key, though not sufficient (e.g., Blade Runner 2049). · Dune can underperform and still garner a sequel (e.g., Edge of Tomorrow). Based on the reputation of Denis, Dune’s cultural footprint, and the cast involved, I think it is reasonable to expect that if Dune is critically successful, box office returns somewhere between Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Inception are possible. My prediction: $730 million ($280 million domestic, $450 million international) What do you all think? Any comparable films to Dune that I overlooked? Note: I’m making a big assumption that Dune is released at a time when theaters are operating at relatively normal capacity. That, sadly, may not end up being the case and/or movie theatre attendance may never return to “normal.”

The soundtrack is stripped down to just these haunting sounds of fog horns and piss buckets. The package everything is delivered in, from an artistic standpoint, is so memorable. The performances by Pattinson and Dafoe are both some of the best I’ve seen this entire year and really, the decade…possibly of all time. They deliver this brilliant script’s dialogue with such passion, humor and intensity. The story in this film is shrouded in mystery but the clues and tools needed to decipher it do exist and with a re-watch, finding them felt so rewarding. (2007) Zodiac 9/10 This is one of my favorite Fincher movies and for anyone familiar with his stellar catalogue, that’s a bold claim. It feels so real and lived-in. The cast is absolutely stacked but so complimentary. It’s not the most violent film, it’s much more story driven but the moments of violence feel fucking powerful. The horror in this film isn’t about the serial killer, it’s really about obsession and Gyllenhaal absolutely nails his performance to bring that aspect home. Despite this film’s high praise by critics and regular assholes like myself, it is a slow-burn. It’s long and tedious and that aspect, which I love, could easily turn someone off. (1981) Raiders of the Lost Ark 9/10 Raiders of the Lost Arc is such an important movie to me. It helped open my eyes to darker content as a child, for better or worse. It also introduced me to one of my favorite characters of all time, Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford doesn’t play a superhero in this movie, he’s very flawed and mortal. Yet, somehow he always seems to prevail, despite dire circumstances. Everything that could ever be said about this film has been said, I’m just here to show my appreciation. (2014) Spring 8.5/10 This movie is wonderful, raw, natural and intriguing. It’s not over-acted or overthought in any way. It’s fucked up and complicated. This felt like an homage to Possession but the love story aspect really shines through. It feels helpless and hopeful at the same time. Benson’s script is amazing. The influences are impossible not to see but the dialogue is incredibly natural. The reactions are the same. I’ve always said that films shot in idyllic landscapes are a blank canvas for horror. There’s so much beautiful contrast. (2007) Timecrimes 8.5/10 I loved this movie when I first saw it but upon rewatching it, I can’t help but stress its influence in the time-loop horror sub-genre. Sure films like Primer definitely helped pave the way but Timecrimes really manages to focus less on the science fiction and more on the horrifying consequences that come with time travel. I really enjoyed Karra Elajalde’s performance, his character’s physical and mental degradation throughout the film is really a high point to me. Almost all of these films on paper would seem predictable in concept but Timecrimes is just another one that manages to pull you in despite that. A part of me knew exactly how this was going to play out but a bigger part of me was too engrossed to be sure. (2018) Gwen 8.5/10 This movie is an atmospheric slow burn down to the T so if that’s a sub-genre you generally don’t enjoy, this isn’t going to be something to change your mind. With that being said, it’s an incredibly heartbreaking story that, while exists in the folk-horror genre, subverts any and all expectations. The characters are real and suffering in this sort of beautiful but also incredibly bleak, barren landscape. Eleanor Worthington-Cox and Maxine Peaks carry the entire film. The story itself, while simple, yet powerful, is unwoven tediously, evoking all sorts of dread. I don’t think- scratch that, I know everyone is not going to like this movie. The plot is way too stripped down for mainstream appeal. If you find yourself empathizing with the characters and become personally involved in the period and setting, it can be an emotional watch. (2005) Constantine 8.5/10 I was pretty surprised at the semi-mixed reaction to this film before I learned it was a comic book adaptation. Listen, I’ve obviously never even heard about this comic but let me just say, as a standalone movie, it’s fucking awesome. It’s basically Keanu Reeves battling his way through hell, murking demons and basically just being badass as shit. I love the entire cast, Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, etc. A true standout to me too was Tilda Swinton who plays the vague gendered Gabriel. The special effects, even 15 years later, are still fucking awesome. There’s a ton of CGI which isn’t always my favorite but it’s quality CGI that stands the test of time. I really loved this movie, I’d recommend it to anyone. (2020) Relic 8/10 Robyn Nevin is fantastic here and all the supporting roles are great but not only does this woman make the movie, she is the movie. Her dialogue, her delivery and her body language, at least to me, are a huge chunk of the entire plot. I just found this movie to be gentle until it isn’t, which makes for the most tense moments. It’s a very claustrophobic film; I think it does justice to a very serious and frightening illness. (1986) The Little Shop of Horrors 8/10 Okay to keep things real, I’ve never been a big musical dude but this movie is fun as hell. Rick Moranis is as goofy as ever and good god…the practical effects are mind-blowing. You’re watching this giant plant movie and it just melts your brain thinking about how it was accomplished. I had to look it up and after finding out it took sped-up footage, vocal matching with said footage and 60 men to operate this giant…puppet(?), I couldn’t be more impressed. (2020) Palm Springs 8/10 It doesn’t take long to catch on that, while this is a romantic comedy, it’s also a sci-fi horror film and a specific subset of sci-fi that makes me anxious. So in some regards, at least to genre placement, there’s my bias. The movie is seriously a treat though. It’s a new spin on an old formula and it’s genuinely funny, suspenseful and endearing. Even if you disagree that it shouldn’t be discussed in the horror circles, you won’t regret watching it. (1979) Nosferatu the Vampire 8/10 This film not only embodies and celebrates the original in terms of structure as well as substance, but in its restrained filmmaking methods; its ability to let shots live without intervention. It’s atmospheric, well-trimmed and just an all-around, exceptional film. Klaus Kinsi as Nosferatu is perfect; I loved the makeup design. His character is so out in the open that the shots have to be perfect in order to avoid the sillier pitfalls of films in the same vein attempting to achieve the same results. It still contains small doses of the eras beloved campiness, which I can appreciate to some degree, as it feels balanced within context. Dracula’s takeover of the town is anything but some violent, typical horror spectacle. Rather, Werner Herzog decides to portray it in a fever-dream-like fashion, elevated by the very minimal but well-used soundtrack. (2009) The House of the Devil 8/10 Modern horror is no stranger to throwback aesthetics from earlier decades but in 2009, that wasn’t the case. Not only did this movie pioneer that but it did it so successfully. My absolute favorite aspect of this film is the retro feel. It captured 70’s horror so incredibly well. Ti West is a talented filmmaker and this is one of my favorites by him. It’s a slow burn but so sinister and despite many complaining that the payoff wasn’t worth the wait, I have to disagree. Also, the suspense during the build-up was my favorite part. The violence, especially early on, while limited, is so powerful and raw. It really set an uneasy tone for the rest of the runtime. (1989) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 8/10 You know, this movie was the least memorable of the trilogy to me and I think that holds up, to a degree. I like this movie a lot though, fuck it, I love this movie. It’s the least horror focused but still has at least one intense body-horror moment. I don’t think too many people talk about how brave this movie is though; it tackles one of the most divisive topics, religion and does so in such a thrilling fashion. Indy is still Indy here, he’s fucking badass; his character and dialogue excel in this entry immensely. Not just dialogue but this film contains some of the best action choreography of the entire series, something that almost seems unfairly diminished through repetition. This movie is fucking awesome. (1984) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 8/10 This is probably the most influential horror movie of my entire childhood. The first time I watched it I had to shut it off at the heart scene and I think it took a few more tries to even make it through the whole thing. Unlike Scream, watching this decades later didn’t really totally eliminate that. I think it’s a scary movie and a really dark turn in the trilogy. There are quirky aspects of it character wise that are kind of goofy but playful. Overall though, goddamn dude, these set pieces are amazing. I love this movie and I’m totally biased but there are so many iconic moments during it. Harrison Ford is also jacked to shit and just at an all-time fuck-shit-up mode. His greedy and gritty character compliments the plot incredibly well. (1984) The Terminator 8/10 This movie, simply put, is badass as shit. Everything you could ever need to know about it is established in the very first scene. I’m aware the series kind of progresses into more action focused territory with the sequels but the original will always be a horror movie to me. The pacing, the unstoppable force that is Arnold, it’s all thrilling as shit. Sure, there’s a few instances of 80’s special effects that have aged like milk, mostly with the final scene but for the most part, the effects look dope still. Cameron hasn’t missed in his entire career in my opinion and this film is a benchmark in multi-genre spanning, epic, cinematic movies. I love it. (2009) The Loved Ones 7.5/10 This is the film that got me into Sean Byrne and it’s really something special. It reminds of almost a modern day interpretation of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, if the dinner scene was the entire film. It’s a non-thinker, fun horror movie in a purest sense. Byrne seems aware of that and the story and pacing all cater to it so well. Robin McLeavy plays one of the most unlikable villains to date and that alone is a ticket for investment in this film. It would seem almost playful to a horror veteran but the sadistic and incestuous nature of her writing is something to behold. This is a popcorn movie but a great one at that. (1973) The Crazies 7/10 There’s some silly and overly-eccentric characters, per Romero’s usual style but I actually enjoyed this one a lot. I’m not even speaking directly about the remake but this film inspired a lot of modern horror films and concepts. There’s this great scene with this old lady knitting that I just adore. The innocent and violent clash in such an effective way. Obviously the horror aspects in that scene, as well as the virus itself are very fictional. The government response though, seems almost plausible, considering how they’re currently handling Covid-19. The miscommunication within government agencies in this film is both satisfying and frustratingly accurate. (2019) I Trapped the Devil 7/10 This one is a bit of a slow-burn but I felt the tension from beginning to end so none of it felt like a blind investment. It had the potential to be another, cookie-cutter, pretentious statement but what I found it to be was simply a well-crafted horror film. While this film doesn’t shoot for the moon, it executes a well-trimmed, concise story and I’d fully recommend it to anyone interested in satanic horror. (1935) The Black Room 7/10 This is another Universal horror film starring Karloff, directed by Roy Neill. It presents itself with the usual, tight-knit flair you may have come to expect but it somehow has seen much less recognition than any of the major monster movies. I really liked this movie. Despite the predictable nature, I found the short run-time to be refreshing and the performances were great. It was also a really cleanly produced. I suspect that’s due to the lack of need for special effects but nevertheless, it’s a high point. Definitely check this one out. It feels warms and slightly gothic; overall, it’s just a very well-executed movie. (2004) The Day After Tomorrow 6/10 This may be due to the unrealistic science fiction needed to drive these plots, but I can’t decide if Emmerich takes his own work seriously. These films are undoubtedly brilliant visual spectacles at times and pretty goddamn entertaining but also a breeding ground for vapid characters. However, his films also seem to have actual political and social commentary. In the case of this film, it’s the world’s most on-the-nose message about climate change. I’m not even sure how much of a criticism that is but take it for what you will. The intense scenes in this movie are legitimately intense and even watching this 16 years after it was released, the CGI is pretty great. New York city is a fun sandbox for disaster porn and I had a great time watching it. (2014) The Possession of Michael King 6/10 I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The “Possession of” movies are a mixed bag and despite this one in particular being really low-budget, they did a great job at creating scary visuals. I loved the psychological torment, specifically this idea with flies that’s legitimately creepy as fuck. They take it to a level where I think right at the end it dips off into the ridiculous but not in a way that’s awful, just not to my personal tastes. (2019) Sweetheart 6/10 Sweetheart is a fairly well-made survival horror film that starts out well but unfortunately fades into mediocrity. While the first half is actually more of a methodical portion of the film, it’s strangely the second act that feels like a chore to watch at times. There’s some talent to look out for here but it seems underdeveloped on this project. With that being said, it’s still really entertaining for the most part, just treat it more as a popcorn movie rather than something to really sink your teeth into. (2013) Boar 6/10 Yeah I don’t even really know what to say. It’s a killer boar movie. It’s fun, the gore is pretty great and it’s well-paced. I don’t really feel inspired to write a novel about it but it’s worth a watch. (2014) Digging up the Marrow 6/10 I’m not surprised to hear people complaining about this film because it’s by no means perfect. However, I am surprised to hear so many people targeting Adam Green’s ego as being the shining flaw in this movie. I have no bias towards the guy, I’m a casual fan but I do think that people mistook the meta-aspects of this story to be simply for self-service. With that being said, I like this movie. I don’t love it but the build-up was pretty intense, carried by an always somewhat unhinged Ray Wise. I’m glad they didn’t show a ton right away or really, at all, because it would have been even cheesier. This is a fun movie though that’s really not meant to be taken all that seriously. The creature design is cool and it’s just an easily digestible popcorn flick. I would have re-wrote the ending a bit to be less convoluted and abrupt (paradoxical almost, I know) but I can still recommend this one. (2015) The Vatican Tapes 6/10 I didn’t have high hopes for this one, exorcism movies are just so oversaturated. With that being said, I was pleasantly surprised. The horror of it all, the culmination or whatever, is exactly what you’d expect and if that seems like a spoiler, it’s more of a statement on the sub-genre itself. It’s the build-up and basically entire first half that impressed me. I truly felt like the events that conspire could happen to anyone. This was by no means a waste of time, despite how many times this story has been done. (2014) The Last Showing 5.5/10 Robert Englund lends his talents to a b-movie of sorts here but the end product isn’t that bad. Outside of him, the acting isn’t bad either. Chris Geere from You’re the Worst is actually in it and he’s such a hilariously miserable cunt. It entertained me enough but in the end, felt really bland. I’m feeling pretty eh on this one. (2017) Lost Child 5/10 Lost Child wasn’t quite what I was expecting, which in some ways, was the only thing I enjoyed about it. They keep the mystery going for a long time and to their credit, I was never exactly sure how things were going to play out. Unfortunately, it’s just really boring and there’s no huge payoff. I liked a few of the characters and as far as production and acting goes, it was just fine. It’s kind of one of those mid-movies that doesn’t do a whole lot wrong but also doesn’t do a whole lot right. (2019) In the Tall Grass 4.5/10 People seem to be pretty divisive about this film to the point where not a lot of middle ground criticism is being offered but that’s where it lands to me. It often engaged me, I like a lot of the sci-fi aspects, felt there were a few good performances and I didn’t hate the conclusion. With that being said, not a single aspect of this movie wow’d me in any fashion. It feels like it actually could have been shortened a bit, as in like an episode of an anthology. I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either.
Gamera ガメラ In this particular article I will be explaining the origins of Gamera as well as how he came to be. I will be talking about the company that first created Gamera and how it was sold to other companies all the way up to what is happening today. Gamera is a gigantic flying Terrapin that was created by Daiei Motion Picture Company and now is owned by Kadokawa Pictures and Publishing Company. Gamera first made it on the screen in 1965 and was created simply because of the success of his counterpart and more popular monster they call Godzilla who has been on the screen a little bit low living Gamera. Godzilla started out in 1954. It was the 1960s when the “Monster Boom gained its popularity in Japan as both of these monsters are Japanese icons. During the 1970s Gamera did attain some prominence on what is called UHF television stations that would feature these movies every Saturday morning as a Saturday matinee type movie. Gamera is a gigantic turtle that door in the Showa Series he stood at 60 m tall and door and the Heisei series he was 80 m tall. To describe Gamera even more Gamera possesses a pronounced sagittal crest on the top of his head and his mouth was filled with gigantic tea with two gigantic fangs protruding from his lower jaw or tusks. Gamera in the Showa Series was a titanic, firebreathing, prehistoric species of tortoise or Terrapin. Gamera fed off of the petroleum-based materials that were on the planet at that time as he consumed it in order to breathe fire and fire at the Jets that would attack him. It is also known that Gamera has the capabilities of flying were Godzilla does not. By consuming the petroleum he is capable of extracting his legs in and they would ignite with flames coming out of all four legs as he propels himself spinning into the air. Now we will talk about the original classic 1965 movie it begins showing bombers from the USSR or Russia as they are being intercepted by American fighters over the United States airspace in the Arctic. As we all know this sets off cataclysmic explosions that release Gamera from the ice and he goes on a rampage and at the end of the movie he is lured into this bay where the top of the bay is closed up it is a rocket and he is sent off into space. Gamera has become a legacy as the Daiei Company who owned Gamera went on to create a lot of movies for the Showa Series. The next one after the original classic would be Gamera vs. Barugon which came out in 1966 and then Gamera vs. Gyaos in 1967, Gamera vs. Virus 1968, and Gamera vs. Guiron 1969, Gamera vs. Jiger 1970, Gamera vs. Zigra 1971, and finally the super cheesiest of all Gamera movies it is called “Gamera: Super Monster” which came out in 1980. For me the movies were really good until after Gamera vs. Gyaos 1967 and then they got silly and super child friendly until Heisei Series. However that would all change for the company that created Gamera The Daiei Motion Picture Company would go bankrupt. This particular company was a product of government efforts to reorganize the film industry during World War II in order to rationalize its resources and increase control over the medium. It was then that the government plan to combine all the film studios into two companies, Masaichi Nagata, an executive at Shinkō Kinema, pressed hard for an alternative plan to create three studios. His efforts won out and Shinkō Kinema, Daito Eiga, and the production arm of Nikkatsu (the Nikkatsu theaters did not take part in the merger) were merged in 1942 to form the Dai Nippon Eiga Seisaku Kabushiki Kaisha, or Daiei for short. The novelist Kan Kikuchi served as the first president, with Nagata continuing as an executive. Daiei's studios were located in Chofu, Tokyo and in Uzumasa in Kyoto. Nagata became president in 1947 and, apart from a brief period when he was purged by Occupation authorities, remained in that position until 1971. Under his reign, Daiei produced Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon (1950) and entered it in the Venice Film Festival, where it won the grand prize and became the first Japanese film to win an international award, thus introducing Japanese cinema to the world. Daiei also produced Teinosuke Kinugasa's Gate of Hell (1953), the first Japanese color film to be shown abroad, earning both an honorary Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Daiei also produced such renowned films as Mizoguchi's Ugetsu (1953) and Sansho the Bailiff (1954), as well as Jokyo (which was entered into the 10th Berlin International Film Festival). On the popular front, Daiei was also known for such successful film series as the Zatoichi films starring Shintaro Katsu, the Sleepy Eyes of Death series featuring Raizō Ichikawa, the Gamera movies, and the Daimajin Trilogy. Daiei also produced many television series such as Shōnen Jet. In its heyday, Daiei featured such talent as the actors Raizō Ichikawa, Shintaro Katsu, Kazuo Hasegawa, Fujiko Yamamoto, Machiko Kyō, and Ayako Wakao; the directors Kenji Mizoguchi, Kon Ichikawa, Yasuzo Masumura, and Kenji Misumi; and the cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa. Like some other film studios, Daiei had its own professional baseball team in the 1950s, the Daiei Stars, which later became the Daiei Unions. These teams eventually became the Chiba Lotte Marines. Now let us talk about the bankruptcy of the Daiei Motion Picture Company it was back in 1971 when they tried to stay alive I teaming up with Nikkatsu and another motion picture company however with the combination of both motion picture companies it was just not enough. Because in 1971 they would declare bankruptcy and it would be the members of the union who however succeeded in getting Yasuyoshi Tokuma, the president of the publishing house, Tokuma Shoten, to revive the company in 1974. This particular version of the Daiei motion picture company would go on to be making only a small number of films, some of which were big budget spectaculars like the international coproduction “The Go Masters” which came out in 1982 and the ever popular and ever loving “Shall We Dance?” Which came out in 1996 and later in the United States this movie would be re-created using Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Susan Sarandon and a very popular cast. This movie turned out to be a very good movie both versions of this movie are very good in their own way. After all the films were produced it would soon be after the passing Yasuyoshi Tokuma, Daiei Film Co. He died on September 20, 2000 in Tokyo, Japan and the company was sold to the Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co. In November 2002, Chairman Maihiko Kadokawa announced that Daiei Film Co. would merge with the company’s own film division, Kadokawa Pictures to form Kadokawa-Daiei Film Co. Ltd. it was during the time that when Yasuyoshi Tokuma, owned the Daiei company he would go on to create the three movie set of the Heisei Series Gamera movies as they are respectively titled “Gamera: Guardian of the Universe” (1995), “Gamera vs. Legion” (1996), and the last movie to speak of is “Gamera vs. Iris” (1999) and these particular movies were directed by Shesuke Kaneko who also directed the Godzilla film “GMK” which came out in 2001 for the Toho company. It is these three movies that puts Gamera back in the game with special effects as well as storyline and acting that surpasses any Godzilla film out there. It was these three movies that were critically acclaimed by the Japanese people. In November 2002 when the company was purchased by Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co. they would create another Gamera movie however they would go back to the Showa Series and this particular movie is very kid friendly and altered in a way that it upset a lot of Gamera fans. This movie even though it was child friendly the Gamera in this movie did not look like any Gamera most people recognize. The worst part about it is that this Gamera did not have a signature roar. Another key note is they change the origins of Gamera as he is capable of exploding which to me did not make any sense however he has to consume a red rock in order to go through changes to become the Gamera that we all know he can be he cannot do this without that red rock. They tentatively name this new Gamera “Toto” he does in fact fight a monster they call “Zedus” this is a gigantic lizard like monster with a big long purple top. To me this monster is not really a worthy competitor to what Gamera has fallen in the past. However it is very accommodating that he fights a tiny Gamera which in this case he does. This movie failed in a lot of ways as it is coming from the triple threat they gave Gamera a dark and eerie presence to a child friendly presence. This particular point is what most fans did not care about the movie. Here is some more interesting facts about Gamera and the company that created him. In 1966 the movie that was released in America as Gamera the invincible is the original 1965 classic that was directed by Noriaki Yuasa and this story was written by Nisan Takahashi it quickly became a favorite to the children who love watching Gamera fight monsters. Like I mentioned above there was a total of seven films that was produced from 1965 to 1971 and the eighth entry was slated for a 1972 release this is where the loss projects come into play and this is a movie that never came to be and this is because the company was in the bankruptcy stage before being picked back up in 1974 they had to scrap this movie because of it. The movie was called “Gamera vs. Garasharp” which would have come out in 1972 but was forced to cease production because of the bankruptcy. This particular movie would have been about Gamera fighting a snake like creature that had the hood of a cobra and the snake body with antennas on its head. As I mentioned before the company would go on to produce the Heisei Series of Gamera movies but for all that they wanted to produce another movie that would actually come out in 1980 it was called “Gamera: Super Monster” the filmmakers at this time were forced to make this film simply because of the contracts for one more Gamera film that was owed to the original Daiei company. It was an unfortunate event that when creating this film it was mostly stock footage with new scenes of a brand-new Gamera flying. It was when the production of the film began that Yuasa saw how poorly Tokuma was handling things and knew that Gamera could have never come back from the film. So he had Takahashi rewrite the ending to where Gamera was killed at the end. Last but not least let us talk about some upcoming and future films for Gamera fans. It was noted in that on March 2014 “Anime News Network reported that a new Gamera production is planned, with no date specified however it is planned to be released sometime in 2015. Some rumors and speculations have risen on the Internet and here are some in my humble opinion something that do not like to hear. It is said they will change Gamera’s form now what that means is they might completely alter the look of Gamera and honestly I am not sure that is a smart thing unless they change his looks to the point that you still recognize him like they do with the Godzilla suits. Another thing they are going to change is his origins and they did that in the last movie called “Gamera Little Brave” which came out in 2006 and that in my opinion was not a good thing for the way they portrayed Gamera in this movie it would have been okay for kids but I did not personally care for the way they handled it. Assuming they are going to change the origin in this movie I hope it has something interesting to which will not be a bad thing I think the worst thing that gets to me is a going to change the looks of Gamera I am not sure how to handle that, but we will have to wait and see. The last keynote that I want to mention is I have heard rumors and speculations that Kadokawa Pictures are thinking about removing Gamera and the fact that he flies and I hope this is just a rumor because honestly in my opinion this would be the most stupid thing they have ever done. Keep in mind it is the 50th anniversary movie for Gamera so for them to create a film they need to completely alter the entire franchise of Gamera give us a completely different Gamera that we could be pleased with, and again we will have to wait and see how they do this! Now this particular article is based on some trivial facts and understanding of what Gamera is and how he was created and what companies owned him and what the companies went through all the way up to today with also updates on the new Gamera movie for his 50th anniversary and I am hoping they will do this well. I hope you enjoy this article! The End

Perhaps this is a simple question that is just indicative of my ignorance, but I've noticed that my FCPX exports are quite a bit less contrasty/softer looking than how they look in the program. This is repeatable. My black point is around 4 IRE on the histogram, after export when I pull it back into FCPX to check the black point is more like 8-9 IRE. I am editing Rec. 709. Editing in ProRes 422 and exporting in ProRes 422. I haven't tested *every* codec but it seems pretty consistent. At the end of the day it isn't a huge problem, I just have to set my black point a few points below where I want it to actually be. It does make grading a bit tricky. Is this just a normal phenomenon? Part of the job? Or am I doing something wrong? Kind of bums me out because things look so crisp and contrasty while grading and a little less so afterwards, but I'll probably be the only one to notice. Thanks! NOTE: worth noting that my screenshot of the export comes from IINA player, but my vimeo upload matches it !
TSPDT 108, Highest Ranking 90 in 2014; Director: Bela Tarr; Writer: Bela Tarr, Barna Mihok, Peter Dobai, Mihaly Vig, Laszlo Krasznahorkai (screenplay and novel); Watched it the week of September 14th on the Criterion Channel. IMDB 439 minutes. Let’s get some basic questions out of the way for this 7+ hour classic. I'll be leaving the text below as a spoiler for a few days as I am watching this with a group of friends and don't want to accidentally give anything away. I think it is worth the watch however I do not believe this film is for everyone. It is a very slow, intentional film that is predominantly made up of long takes. Dialog happens in bursts and the film is meticulous framing and staging of shots that make the film appear like moving paintings. There are 12 vignettes, roughly 40 minutes each so it is a film that would have probably been converted to a mini-series on Netflix pretty seamlessly. It is a non-linear film so the audience has to really pay attention to connect the order in which each vignette takes place. If you’re still with me and interested, let’s keep it going. What is Satantango about? This is the story of a rural community that all live on an estate. Not sure exactly what that means but it has the feel of just like a co-op. They want more, and ultimately wind up following a figure that does not have their best interest at heart but is a smooth communicator and natural born leader. He’s not playing for their team but convinces them he cares deeply for their well-being and has them move to set up shop in a new village. The estate doctor, their main caretaker, has failed them. He has given in to the power of alcohol and has become completely useless even to the point where they have to take care of him. No one else who lives there is a leader, so when Irimias comes back from prison - they think he had been dead for a year and a half - on the same day as a funeral, he is able to slip in and fill this void while they are in a vulnerable position and win their hearts and minds. For those of us with any basic bible-based background you may recognize the description of a character that closely resembles Satan. It is intentional on my part, but mainly because I believe it intentional on Tarr’s part as well. There is imagery of animals being led to a slaughter throughout the movie and it turns out we end up watching a group of souls being manipulated and ultimately led to a slaughter. Even at one point there is a young boy who notices horses running free and says “looks like they escaped from the slaughterhouse again” and the devil character asks “whose side are you on anyways?”. The question feels random, but I do believe this lens offers an attempt at an explanation. The character so closely resemble a Jesus-type figure, except he casually commits adultery, lies and plans a deception and murder. So, what we have is a story about the ultimate deception told from a God-like perspective where there is no central main character and we are just voyeurs in this story. It is a cynical story where no one really wins and all of the villagers have half-baked plans that ultimately go nowhere as soon as anyone with the slightest dynacism comes in to offer a ‘better’ option. We are either followers or leaders, sheep or farmers. I would need to research this, but I have to imagine there is a connection to the history of Hungary as well. It just has the vibe to it, where I could easily see some of the mysterious soldiers in uniform representing an authoritarian government and the villagers a group of people that were attempting to live under the radar of the regime. As far as an opinion on Satantango, I really enjoyed it. Way more than I thought I would. The pacing put me in a trance and I found that Tarr had complete control of my emotions. If the characters had a slight smile or sarcastic glance or fear I felt it all. I will eventually be watching this film again, and look forward to that time.

2020.09.18 03:01 AsleepHovercraftFavorite movie of Each year I have been alive...
Ok, since I was born in 1995 I'd though it would be a bit easier and fun to make a list of my favorite film from each year I've been alive. Some years were harder than others, as in 2013 where nominating Gravity for my favorite almost feels like an insult to many other great movies. I mean I saw Gravity six times in theaters, more than any other film. And it seemed to be the one to move me the most. Let's discuss.. 1995 - LA HAINE, directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, France 1996 - TRAINSPOTTING, directed by Danny Boyle, United Kingdom 1997 - JACKIE BROWN, directed by Quentin Tarantino, United States 1998 - AMERICAN HISTORY X, directed by Tony Kaye, United States 1999 - RATCATCHER, directed by Lynne Ramsay, United States 2000 - REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, directed by Darren Aronofsky, United States 2001 - MULHOLLAND DRIVE, directed by David Lynch, United States 2002 - ROAD TO PERDITION, directed by Sam Mendes, United States 2003 - KILL BILL: VOLUME 1, directed by Quentin Tarantino, United States 2004 - PRIMER, directed by Shane Carruth, United States 2005 - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, directed by Ang Lee, United States 2006 - PAN'S LABYRINTH, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, Spain / Mexico 2007 - I AM LEGEND, directed by Francis Lawrence, United States 2008 - SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, directed by Danny Boyle, United Kingdom 2009 - A PROPHET, directed by Jacques Audiard, France 2010 - THE SOCIAL NETWORK, directed by David Fincher, United States 2011 - GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, directed by David Fincher, United States 2012 - SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, directed by David O. Russell, United States 2013 - GRAVITY, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, United Kingdom 2014 - MOMMY, directed by Xavier Dolan, France 2015 - MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, directed by George Miller, Australia 2016 - UNDER THE SHADOW, directed by Babak Anvari, Iran 2017 - MOTHER!, directed by Darren Aronofsky, United States 2018 - HEREDITARY, directed by Ari Aster, United States 2019 - THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO, directed by Joe Talbot, United States
Hi everybody! I hope you all are healthy and safe. Here is this week’s “Kards Konfidential” — inside details on the season 18 finale ”Family Matters.” For those of you who don’t know, E! airs these right before a new episode, and little text bubbles pop up during the episode that gives insights on production and the sisters. This episode’s plots were a sight to see. The A-story was the sisters deciding which of their mansions was going to be used for their annual Christmas Eve spectacular and the B-story was Kim carrying a reluctant Scott through a storyline about his parents. Cold Open/Scene 1: Kris, Kim and Khloe eat lunch. Khloe and Kris set up a contrived plot line about Khloe assisting Kris during the holidays,even though the holidays already happened.
Khloe has said her favorite "cheat food" is pizza.
It's a running joke in the family how dependent Kris is on her assistant, Matthew. It was evident during Khloe's infamous impersonation of Kris in Wyoming last season, say producers.
Rob is the only one in the family who doesn't really have an assistant.
Of everyone in the family, producers would hire Khloe as their assistant. She's very organized, can juggle so much and get so much done.
Some of the girls have had Kris train their assistants.
Kris and Khloe have had their assistants the longest. But Kris has staff that have been around for years, they're just not seen on camera.
Scene 2: Kim tells Khloe and a silent Kourtney that she will not be hosting the Christmas Eve party
Khloe and Kourtney weren't shocked Kim wasn't doing the Christmas Eve party again. Producers say they understand how big of an undertaking it is.
According to experts, the estimated cost of Kim's 2018 Christmas Eve party may have been $1.3 million.
Kim told producers she wasn't hosting the party before she told Kris.
Scene 3: Kim @ Scott’s house where they discuss Scott’s past and go through old photos.
One thing Scott has said he wants for his home is a piece of Jean-Michel Basquiat art, "but I can't really afford it" he has said. ( 😂💀)
Scott's parents appeared on one episode of this series in 2010. And one episode of Kourtney and Kim Take New York in 2011.
Producers didn't have a lot of old footage of Scott like they do of the girls. They didn't start collecting stuff from his childhood until they were filming this episode.
The family loves seeing that Scott was the same ball of funny Lord energy then like he is now, and that his kids are very much taking after him in that way.
Producers enjoyed seeing that he had a modeling career as a kid, so it was cute to see those photos and clippings.
Kris' start time at the Kylie Cosmetics Office varies depending on her daily schedule. Producers say Kris is notorious for being an early riser. As a boss, Kris is no-nonsense and efficient. She's very quick to spot even the smallest red flag.
This was the first time producers have ever seen Khloe use a photocopy machine.
Producers think Matthew is a great match for Kris because he's "fun but also gets shit done, which is true of Kris too."
Not seen in this episode is an errand that Kris sent Khloe on to hunt for a specific set of plates. Unfortunately, even after going to many places, Khloe couldn't find them. Producers later learned that the plates are one of a kind and only sold on an island in Italy.
This was the first time producers ever saw an E! executive at Kylie Cosmetics.
Rod (Aissa) didn't fully know he'd be on camera. Producers say he was a good sport about it.
Rod actually spent a longer amount of time with Khloe than was shown. He was really funny and encouraging towards her.
Kourtney's assistant of many years ended up becoming Scott's assistant.
Producers say everyone in the family would be a "bit thrown off their game" without their assistants. Their assistants are key to keeping the wheels in their worlds turning.
Khloe was proactive at organizing and tidying up without Kris telling her to.
Tasks not seen in this episode were Kris making Khloe call all the assistants to schedule a family meeting and making Khloe deliver a huge box that barely fit in her car. Kris insisted that Khloe serve her lunch salad only when it was at room temperature.
Scene 7: Scott's uncle visits for a dinner feat. Kim and Khloe
There were a few VHS taps that arrived with Scott's belongings. Producers offered to get him a VHS player to watch the tapes off camera.
Producers were most surprised to learn that Scott was active and tried different sports.
Producers think Penelope takes after Kourtney, but Reign and Mason both have different parts of Scott's personality.
Producers say it's a real trip to see the younger kids try to make sense of the film crew being around. They eventually normalize it as they get older and older.
Producers knew Scott's parents and childhood were both touchy subjects. They made sure Scott knew they were operating at his pace.
Producers noticed a "fatheson parental chemistry" between Scott and Uncle Dave. It was palpable from the moment Dave arrived.
Scene 8: Kourtney comes for Health Nut's use of plastic bowls and Kylie's over-the-topness during a family dinner discussing Christmas Eve/morning
Producers say everyone has a different aesthetic at their homes. It's always interesting to see what they'll do when hosting in terms of decorating a table, serving style, etc.
Production knew Kourtney was on a break from Health Nut. The crew often orders Health Nut for lunch too.
Kris first broached the subject of Christmas Eve with Kourtney right after Kim said she wouldn't host. Kourtney was always the no-brainer because of her backyard space.
The family never considered skipping the 2019 Christmas Eve party. It's a thirty-something-year tradition.
The crew has never filmed with the family on Christmas morning.
Kourtney has put Christmas trees in each of her three kids' bedrooms, which they decorate
Kylie has "Mary Jo" tattooed on her arm in her grandfather's writing.
Producers weren't surprised Kourtney was willing to take on the Christmas Eve party AND Christmas morning. "We know she loves Christmas."
Scene 9: Kris tells Khloe that she did a crappy job at being her assistant
Producers say everyone in the family has cute PJs, but Khloe has the most extensive silk PJ collection.
Kourtney is the family member most likely to wear PJs all day.
Though Kris is known for being a boss, producers think as an assistant, Kris would be "the BEST."
The family shares their yearly wrapping paper picks on a group text so there's no conflict.
Scene 10: The girls + party planner Mindy Weiss discuss the Christmas Eve/morning debacle
Of all the kids, North and Penelope beg for a pet the most.
The family hires Mindy Weiss for every event they throw... producers say it's probably at least two per month - big or small.
Producers say every party Mindy Weiss does is incredible. She's so creative and it's amazing how she transforms spaces.
Kourtney always hosts Halloween dinner at her house followed by trick-or-treating with the kids.
Kendall always hosts the "adult" Halloween party.
Khloe hosts the 4th of July.
Thanksgiving has rotated from Kylie's to Khloe's to Kris' in Palm Springs the last few years.
Of all the sisters, producers think Kylie missed her calling as a party planner.
Christmas morning was never a debate in the past because Kourtney had kids first and has hosted Christmas morning since Mason was born.
The sisters respect that they each just want to have the best Christas for their kids.
Scene 11: Scott, his uncle, and Reign go through Scott's old family photos
Kourtney and Scott both have tons of photo albums for each of their kids, but Kourtney takes the most pictures of the kids.
When shooting something emotional, producers prep by making sure everyone is aware and to be a bit sensitive.
Producers knew it was hard for Scott to look at pictures of his parents and childhood. It was something he'd put off really healing from - this was a big first step.
It was fun for producers to see pictures of Scott skiing and snowmobiling... and just how much Mason looks like Scott did as a kid.
Scene 12: Kris, Kourtney and Khloe discuss Christmas morning and get to the bottom of where their hot chocolate is coming from
No one in the family is even a little bit of a grinch about the holidays. They're all Christmas-obsessed.
The family starts planning for the holidays in the summer.
Every year, the family sends the production crew Christmas gifts. Most crew members wait to open them until Christmas morning.
For every holiday brunch, Kourtney has said she makes beeshee. It's an Armenian breakfast that's like French toast.
The "battle of wills" among Kris, Khloe and Kourtney over Christmas morning didn't surprise producers. They always work things out no matter what.
Kourtney's kitchen hacks include storing garlic in the garage and onions in the fridge.
Kourtney has said her last meal would be McDonalds french fries, and a vanilla milkshake.
Mindy and her team exchanged lots of emails with the family about party inspiration and ideas.
Kourtney took the lead on the design and overall look for the Christmas Eve party.
Mindy's team only had three weeks to pull the Christmas Eve party together.
Mindy knows the family so well that she can dial in exactly what they want.
Kourtney has a holiday playlist that she updates every year.
Scene 13: The Christmas Eve Party
The install and setup for the party took Mindy Weiss' team three days.
Only one producer was a guest at the Christmas Eve party, and given strict instructions they couldn't film at all.
Producers say Kim and Khloe are the best at self-shooting footage.
Sia was perfect to perform at the party because she's a close family friend.
Kendall and Kourtney are usually the biggest night owls in the family.
Kris and Corey spent Christmas morning alone together before gathering with the rest of the family at Kourtney's house.
Scene 14: The girls + Kris discuss how great the Christmas Eve party was
Filming around the holidays is stressful since the family is so busy and they want private time.
Producers say it becomes a countdown to when we lose them from filming for the rest of the year.
Producers say Kourtney felt pressure to have everything the way the family likes it on Christmas morning.

2020.09.18 02:05 Sonic2006fanKing of The Monsters is overvalued...
Look, I know that I am not well known among you, but nevertheless I can give my opinion as anyone. The most recent Godzilla movie, Godzilla: King of The Monsters, liked most of the fans, both for its battles, monsters, etc. And well, as a fan, I can assure you that this movie is not half as good as they say it is. I saw it a few months after it came out, and I really liked it, but it was still not what I expected. The movie really wasn't as good as I thought it would be, and that's why in my ranking of Godzilla movies it is barely at rank B, in the same rank as Invasion of Astro-Monster, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, Godzilla: Final Wars and Godzilla: Planet of The Monsters. Only unlike these, I didn't enjoy it at all. The plot is generic, the characters mediocre, and I don't really consider it a "remake" of Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster as many fans dare to say. It is not the same or a joke; It's like saying that the 1998 Godzilla is a remake of the original 1954 movie, when the truth doesn't seem like it. Okay, as I already mentioned, the story and characters are a soft spot. But will the monsters be too? Fortunately, they are not as human as the plot and the human characters, but they still left much to be desired. Godzilla here is shown quite well, and its design improved somewhat compared to the 2014 film. Mothra had a not very remarkable participation, but it really was enough (although that she died was to be expected, do not deny it). Rodan is simply a copy of Starscream, but he really gave a lot. And King Ghidorah, well I suppose he also gave a lot. But despite this, there are times when monsters look ridiculous, no matter how serious the movie is. King Ghidorah chasing Madison, and Godzilla appearing with helicopters accompanying him are a case in point. Really, that scene was unnecessary, and I do not understand why Godzilla would be accompanied by helicopters. It just doesn't square my head. The reference to Terror of Mechagodzilla might be good, but it still doesn't surprise me. And now I'd like to talk about something that people turned into one of the worst memes of 2019 and 2020. King Ghidorah was completely sloppy; their three heads have different attitudes, but hearing that just disappoints me, let alone that the left is stupid. And if that weren't enough, they have names. The right is called Ichi, the middle Ni, and the left San (also called Kevin). This seems to me quite cringe on the part of people, and although in movie productions it is normal to give nicknames to the creatures, they are never taken seriously most of the time because they are never mentioned in the final product. For example, Katahdin from Prophecy was called Barbara during production, but we all called her Katahdin because of the movie, right? Not to mention that King Ghidorah's fate here was simply pathetic. Well, here my complaints about the movie would end, and if I had to recommend other Godzilla movies other than this one, I would recommend the original 1954 Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster, The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla '98, Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah; Giant Monsters All-out Attack, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla: Final Wars. Yes, those are all that I can recommend, since I have not seen them all. But despite all this, Godzilla: King of The Monsters is a decent movie, and if you liked it I appreciate it. Now I can't wait to see Godzilla vs. Kong.

This next month, being particularly fond of horror films, we decided to dedicate every day in October to our undying love of everything creepy. We are planning on watching a movie every day, then coming together on the 30th of October, via the wonders of the internet, and talking about them. Join us in watching as many of the listed movies as you like and come here and tell us what you thought. You know the drill. Instead of doing our regular bi-monthly podcast, we are gonna do a video chat, drinking in our costumes and talking about the movies for as long as it takes. We are still working out some of the details, but message me if you are interested in participating. I plan to release the video (and maybe audio) shortly after, as a special. In the mean time, enjoy the rest of noir month and get ready to get spooktacular on the 1st! HORRORTOBER 2020 LIST
2020.09.17 22:23 spacepatrollulucoI believe Netflix started it's own smear campaign over the film "Cuties" and everyone played into it
The sudden interest spanning across the entire internet against pedophilia is an incredibly admirable one. However, it's worth mentioning that the sexual exploitation of minors is barely new and is hardly secretive. I'm not talking about coded language and hidden meetings either. If anything, the media makes MORE money off of people being outraged by pedophilia than they do exploiting children as a stand-alone. My theory is based off of this information, if you want to get to the theory itself, go down to the bold. In 2009, Toddlers in Tiara's hit TLC. The outrage was immediately. Major media outlets brought in child psychologists to condemn what was shown on Toddler's in Tiaras. However, it went on for 7 seasons. You can make the argument that T&T was scripted, but that makes it worse. That knowledge implies that a story about a child being mistreated, exploited and sexualized is one that will sell. You can make the argument that TLC wasn't funding convicted offenders or anything... oh wait. You can't. Honey Boo Boo's mother was caught out with two convicted sex offenders over time. The father to two of her children and also the man who molested her oldest daughter at eight. Despite this, TLC is still pushing T&T spin-offs. I wonder why? (I won't even get into 19 Kids and Counting.) In 2010 a video went viral of a children's dance competition, where the 8(ish) year old girls performed a dance to "Single Ladies" in very revealing costumes. (I'd rather you didn't look up the video, but you can read about it here.) Outrage. Made national headlines. Was covered by news outlets. It was made very clear by the media that this is VERY controversial. I'll always remember a quote from the parents. "This is taken completely out of context," Cory Miller, father of one of the girls, told "Good Morning America" today. "The girls weren't meant to be viewed by millions of people." It doesn't mean I approve that the dance took place, but it did make me realize" "Oh. By trying to spread the word about sexualizing children, everyone put it on everyone's social media timelines instead. By trying to protect these children, everyone just made their dance seen by all of America instead of a small dance competition." Which is funny, because Dance Moms debuted only two years later. Again, I won't link any of the dances or costumes that gained notoriety and controversy for their sexualization. But the title "Topless Showgirls" for one of the dances should be enough to convince you this programming was both bad, and exploited children sexually for controversy. Many of the children have come out saying that there was general abuse on the show and at the studio. Again, total outrage by the World Wide Web. Disgust all around. It lasted for eight seasons. The show also turned some of the girls into A list celebrities. Have you cancelled your Netflix subscription because they condone pedophiles? Makes sense. However in 2013, it hosted the documentary "Are All Men Pedophiles? a documentary that advocated it was unfair to expect men to refrain from acting on their attraction to teenagers. It tries to make the case that there's a difference between pedophilia and attraction to people under 18. I haven't watched the whole film, because it's gross, but you can find the whole doc on YouTube. Again, not recommending anything. Now, we're on to Cuties. You've all heard the argument that Maïmouna Doucouré wrote the story to critique a culture that sexualizes children, as a feminist 2017 piece. That she worked with achild psychologistduring filming. I'm not here to convince you whether it is or isn't a strong message. However, it's curious that Netflix chose to pick up this title instead of making their own. America is more than comfortable with existing content that sexualizes children. You can make a case against Toddlers & Tiaras, Dance Moms, Thirteen, Little Miss Sunshine, Leon, Pretty Baby, Taxi Driver, etc. (Am I calling out all of these films? Not quite. This is a controversy sub not a film sub. I want to be unbiased. But you can make the case that they have their problems.) Netflix had already announced the aquisition of "Cuties" on July 20th. However, twerking/dancing/the actresses weren't mentioned at all. "We're excited to announce that CUTIES (MIGNONNES), from writer-director Maïmouna Doucouré — who won the World Cinema Dramatic Jury Award for Directing at this year's Sundance Film Festival. — will debut on Netflix 9 September" Then August 20th rolls around. There's a new poster for Netflix, depicting the main actresses in sexualized clothing and poses. No real mention of the film's Sundance success. The poster is indistinguishable from something out of Dance Moms or Toddlers & Tiaras. Netflix is pushing the twerking angle instead. Between July 20th and August 20th, #SaveOurChildren and similarly themed activism has started trending on every single social media platform. Surely Netflix knew about this, surely they knew to be more sensitive and aware of the sexualization of children in media? Even after the movie was trending BEFORE it's release, wouldn't it make sense for Netflix to consider at leasttoning downsome of the scenes with sexual content for it's streaming debut? No, they knew exactly what we would do. The moment "Cuties" was live on the streaming platform, people disgusted by the movie immediately took stills and clips from the film and put them everywhere. Everyone raced to watch the movie and critique the uncomfortable scenes. It was talked about by everyone. I have never watched Cuties, but I have seen almost every single compromising or sexually themed shot from the movie without ever having to look them up. There are countless photos of these children's close-up butts twerking on my Twitter feed. I never even consented to viewing these images, they're just on everyone's social media pages. In the grand scheme of things, I think Netflix knew this would happen. They knew their platform would get backlash, but more importantly to them, free publicity. If the outrage had not happened, I honestly don't think "Cuties" would have been a popular watch on Netflix. A solid 90% people I know who know about the movie know about it because of the outrage. I think Netflix planted the outrage themselves in an effort to make headlines. Ultimately, despite everyone's best intentions against fighting child sex exploitation, the end result was thousands of people sharing photos and videos of four eleven year olds in promiscuous outfits twerking. Yes, people are aware of the film "Cuties" now and the offensive cinematography, but we can't ignore how what ended up happening was millions of people have now (hopefully unintentionally) ogled a group of 11 year olds. Netflix knows what they did. The only question is, what should we do to actively prevent it from happening next time?

Hello! I'm 25M from Europe and I seek career and life advice. To sum up:
Raised in a country-side with both parents;
Decided to become movie director at the age of 16;
Did audio-visual arts in high school, field in study: AV and sociality;
Graduated in 2014, but didn't get into university;
This failure prompted me to get a credit on national television within 3 years;
Achieved this goal only a year later, in 2015, at the age of 20 (still in the country-side, didn't move to city for this);
Graduated with diploma in applied sciences (2016);
Because of the national television goal achieved so early, I started writing feature film script;
Dropped out of bachelor's degree in 2017;
Gave a successful pitch to the leading movie producer in my country (2018);
4 months after, my dad suffered a stroke and became paralysed;
Caregiver to my father for a year and a half now;
Now in 2020, I'm ready to start a relationship.
All my actions are done by following my heart. Life has been difficult at times, but I can't complain, because I have achieved so much: got credited on television and managed to save my father from death. Although, I feel very depressed at times and would like to move on with my life. My movie script still hangs on online and introducing it to the other companies is difficult (unless you have a degree in film). I have been to psychiatrist for couple of times. I have described all my wins and losses, in which they have told me: "...(simply) LIVE!" I really take intrest in improving my financial situation: investing in stocks and saving up money. I have done well for my family, but I think I would like to have something for myself: a girl would be alright. Haven't found that girl for whom I would fight 'till the end of time. Your advices would be welcomed!
