Should I date the goofy girl I met in the hospital waiting room?

2020.09.17 08:50 Pepisnotsogreat Should I date the goofy girl I met in the hospital waiting room?

So like the a lot of you I am reduced to dating on apps because of COVID-19 and so my experience has been largely negative, there's been mostly no energy or I have been effectively catfished.
I think I have liked only three out of literally dozens. One I dated three times and then CBA'd. The rest have been pretty blah.
I was getting my road rash checked from a cycling crash - work was quite insistent I should get the half-dozen oozing wounds over a good part of my body (turns out they were all fine and are since mostly healed).
Anyway some rather quirky girl came in assisted by paramedic. She has some minor heart condition caused by a hormonal problem.
She saw me and immediately sat next to me and joked about a bit. She was a bit loud and boisterous and overfriendly. I felt attracted to her and I felt a real warmth and genuineness from her.
All I know is that she is Hungarian and does technical work (unsure what) in another hospital and owns her home (which is pretty impressive in London!).
Anyway, she gave me a stone she had painted in acrylics all these messages of love and paintings of flowers with her name.
She asked me to add her to my FB. I was a little unsettled.
That evening I added her to my Instagram (I am not on Facebook). And her pictures aren't all that crazy, pictures of London with messages of love and peace underneath, not many likes though, which suggests that she is not super social - which I like.
Should I pursue her and ask her out?
Edit - She's spammed my Insta with weird mystical posts!?!
And she's also said she would like to go for a coffee today, actually now, but I am at work and I have a phone interview at 2pm so I said 3pm would be fine.
She will either be amazing or stalk me.
Edit: She was okay, a little weird. I ended up spending a long time with her and she walked back to mine but I couldn't allow her to see my flat because it was a tad messy and first date.

2020.09.16 23:23 ultragamer117 Ipon experience.

Hello Hungarian gamers and tech enthusiasts. I am a 16 years old Polish-American gamer that currently lives in Romania as my familiy moved there at the beginning of the year with my dad's job. Tomorrow is my birthday and coincidentelly is the release of the nVidia RTX 3080 GPU which I intend to buy as a "treat yourself" present. Unfortunately major electronics retailers here have really high mark-up . However I found this online store in Hungary called Ipon that delivers to Romania and the prices are somewhat lower. I was curious if anyone bought anything from them in recent times and how was the experience. Is this an ok store? Do they have new products in stock on launch date? How is the customer experience? How do they treat returns? Is there anything in particular that I should know?

2020.09.16 16:20 GlitterDeath666 I will analyse every world championship game ever played (Day 38)

Today we begin with the match Steinitz vs. Gunsberg. Join ChessChampion for a regular update. After Steinitz beat Chigorin in 1889, his new challenger is the hungarian chess master Isidor Gunsberg. Gunsberg had already won multiple big tournaments such as Hamburg (1885), where he finished first in front of Blackbourne, Bird and Tarrasch, and drew a match against Chigorin in 1890.
The match was played at the Manhatten Chess Club. The winner would be first to 10 games (draws not counting), or most wins after 20 games.

2020.09.13 17:13 Gryfonides [Spoilers PUBLISHED] Dothraki are no Mongols

From AskHistorians, adopted to finally end the whole discussion on how Dothraki would totally destroy everyone.
(...) Whereas the Mongols adopted armour, siege engines, literacy, taxation, statecraft, etc extremely rapidly, the Dothraki are almost pathological in their refusal to adapt their way of life to those of the people they meet. They conquer no kingdoms but lay waste to them instead, they form no state of their own but roam endlessly from one end of Essos to the other, doing little more than feuding and raiding. And, when presented with an enemy who refuses to be intimidated by them, their pride causes them to abandon good tactics (such as attacking on the flanks) and to literally commit suicide en masse.
Why am I harping on so much about how the Dothraki aren't based on the Mongols? Well, because the Mongols were, while not quite entirely exceptional, nonetheless very nearly the pinnacle of steppe warriors. Their combination of discipline, broadly meritocratic system of leadership and adaptability made them a much more serious threat than previous steppe confederations.
You have to remember, most of the sedentary peoples the Mongols conquered were used to steppe warriors and knew how to fight them. Any kingdom or civilisation on the borders of the steppes had to fight nomads on a regular basis, and some, like the Hungarians, were even descended from them. That's one major reason why the Mongol threat was not treated as seriously as hindsight indicates they should have.
And how did they fight them? Well, a major part of it was indeed to have archers or crossbowmen behind a wall of spearmen. Whether we look at Arrian's Array Against the Alans, the Praecepta militaria of Nikephoros II Phokas, the infantry formations used by the Crusaders against the forces of the Islamic world, the infantry formations of the Islamic world or, indeed, various Chinese armies dating back to at least the early Han dynasty, we find that this combination of troops is one measure taken to defeat horse archers in battle.
However, infantry are not enough, no matter how well equipped. A strong cavalry arm - most often trained in horse archery - is necessary in order to protect the infantry from ambush, to exploit weaknesses in the enemy lines, to counter attack when the opportunity presents itself, to ambush the enemy where possible, to chase the defeated enemy (although not to far). In addition to a lighter arm of horse archers, heavily armoured cavalry which, while not capable of pursuing to any great degree, is necessary to make the most of opportunities where they can charge into the middle of the enemy horse archers - as at Arsuf - and fight them on unequal terms that favour their heavy armour and skill at close quarters combat. It's also necessary in order to prevent the light cavalry from this sort of situation.
With that said, the Mongols nonetheless managed to overcome these measures through a combination of superior generalship and superior discipline. The technological factor (the recurve bow) is largely overrated (...) . Similarly, the theoretical maximum range is grossly over stated, as the actual effective range on horseback is well within the effective range of selfbows and crossbows - somewhere between 50 and 80 yards.

In short, that is why I don't think that Dothraki are any threat to Westeros. (I cut down parts of the post so to shorten it, full text with bibliography in a link.)

2020.09.13 10:57 daLok1nho Is there any source for 'Old Hungarians' being decimated by Mongols or were their numbers small from the beginning?

Hello, I am your northern neighbor, I haven't found any 'ask Hungarians' subreddit so I am writing here because I am curious about the long-lasting effects of certain historical events that had happened in the past and have a large effect to this date, this concerns the population makeup of the Hungarian Kingdom during the Middle Ages.
I came across a source of a referenced claim on wikipedia (the reference seems to be unavailable as of now) that up to a half of the entire Hungarian population was wiped out by a Mongol invasion. First of all, is this claim true or close to the truth? Are there any historical sources on this from Hungarian chronicles?
I remember reading that after the Ottomans were defeated, that resettling of Germans and Slavs started to take place in the Kingdom of Hungary, was this also a thing after the Mongol invasion?
This would, hypothetically at least, explain the de facto completely Indo-European genetic makeup of nowadays Hungary, right? I do understand that indo-european peoples could've been already a part of the Hungarian tribes that came into the Pannonian basin, but surely they weren't so overwhelmingly European from the start.
I am not making any evil assumptions, no nationalism nor hostility is invoked/involved nor am I pulling out any Slota-level BS, I am genuinely curious whether you have any direct sources for these claims that I've read, alternatively you could address my 'hypothesis' regarding the genetic makeup.
Thanks a lot for any objective answers!

2020.09.11 22:00 neni1020 [UPDATE] Entitled housemate kicks herself out of the apartment

Hi, I'm a 24F from Hungary, I am currently in my last year of pharmacy uni and I live in a two bedroom apartment.
So my friend who lived in the other room of the apartment moved out in march because of Covid, and I had to look for another person to move in, but because of the virus people weren't looking for apartments that time, which was a big problem for many owners, and landlords.
I was lucky because my landlords are really nice people and they like me, so they agreed to let me keep the place while not staying there ( I had to move home for 6 months, because I had to help out in the family pharmacy, which was basically a warzone, thank to all the people who wanted to buy all their meds at the same time, but thats another story...), and they even lowered the rent by half, and I only had to pay the half of my part of the apartment.
So I had the ad for the apartment up for 6 months, and barely had 2-3 people interested, but they ended up not wanting the room saying that they don't know if uni will start again in person, or if there will be a second wave, etc..
In august it started to pick up, because the uni decided that it will start with in person classes, so everyone was looking for places since dorms accepted less people than usual.
I get a message from EP (entitled person) saying that she would love to see the place, so I set up a time and she comes over and looks at the room. EP looks at everything, I tell her about everything, and she says that she will take it right there and then, she goes om about how perfect it is for her, because she works a few streets away from here and she was living in the building next door, but got kicked out suddenly and rudely ( this was a big red flag, but I didn't notice, because she was really nice and respectful with me,so I just believed her)
So I tell the landlords, they are happy that someones moving in, and they write a contract with her, take the security deposit etc. And then the problems start.
EP keeps complaining to me how the room is just too small for her, and she has nowhere to put her stuff.. her room is bigger than mine, it's 17 square meters, it is pretty big compared to most apartments for this price ( she rents the room for 40000 Hungarian Forints, which is apr. 130 USD + utility, for comparison an averege room in an apartment or a one room apartment this close to uni is around 60000-70000 HUF ~200 USD + utility), and the room has a big wardrobe and a good sized dresser.
When the landlord comes over to fix a door handle that was coming out, she tells him that he should buy her more wardrobes, because I have more than two in my room and it's not fair. I told her before that almost all the furniture in my room is mine, I bought them with my own money. The landlord tells her that he won't buy more for her, and she sulks for days about it.
Then the same week she calls the landlord over, he lives an hour away, because the light had gone out in the bathroom and he should change it for her. We have lightbulbs in the apartment, and I would have changed it but I wasn't there that week. EP is 33 and she cant change a simple lightbulb, and drags someone away from his family on a sunday for a 2 minute fix..
The week after this she starts complaining about her bed, it's a double bed,and the previous renter had no problems with it whatsoever. She is saying that it's broken, which it is not, and that the mattress is just too uncomfortable, which it is also not, I slept on that bed before when we had movie night with my previous housemate, and it is just an average mattress. She then proceeds to call the landlord and tell him that he absolutely has to change the bed for her, because it is broken (not).
The landlord had another bed in storage, it was a new bed, never used before but it was a single bed, they asked her if that would be okay for her. She said no way, she is not gonna sleep in a single bed, the landlord said that then there is nothing they can do. EP was sulking over this for about a week, then she decided to use the 'I'm sick' card, she called the landlord and told him that she has had spine problems for years now, and her doctor just told her that she needs to have a special mattress to sleep on, because her back is already in a very bad stage, so she insists that the landlord should buy it for her.
The landlord tells her that she should just buy it for herself since it is her own personal problem, and it is not his responsibility to take care of her, he is already offering her a good place to stay in for less than the average market price. She gets so angry at this that she tells him that she will immediatly give up the room, this is september 1st, so she was here for a month.
She doesn't tell me this, the landlord notifies me, which surprises me because on sept.3 she is still in the room with all her stuff. I tell the landlord, and I talk to EP to get an idea of what is going on. She tells me that she is staying till october, because on the contract it says that she has a 30 day notice period before moving out. I tell her that she misunderstood the contract, because it says on it that SHE has to give the LANDLORD a 30 days notice with a moveout date, before moving, so we can find someone to replace her.
EP keeps saying that thats what she did, when she said that she will be giving up the room from sept. 1st immediatly. Well she has a different definition of immediatly than me or the landlord, so it turns out that the landlord already put up an ad for the room, and a lot of people are interested, so he gave her till the 12th to move all her stuff out.
She keeps crying that it is too sudden and unfair, and we all lied to her, me too, because I told her that the landlords were nice people and how can we be so cruel, when she is sick. I just saw that she put up an ad on facebook that she is looking for a room that is big has a lot of dressers and a very comfortable bed, because she was suddenly kicked out from her place rudely. And this is when I remembered what she told me when we first met about her previous place, I bet she did the same things and the landlord had enough of her there too.
I'll be very interested in what she is going to do in the last few days, and if she finds a better place for the same price. I'll update if something interesting happens. Thanks for reading, I had to write it out because she gave me a lot of anxiety this last few weeks.
[UPDATE]:
I just heard her having a meltdown in her room. She got a call from her parents ( I suppose ), and she started shouting and crying at the same time, saying how this is all her parents fault, because they should just sell their house and buy her an apartment.
She told them that they don't give a crap about her, because if they did they wouldn't be so selfish to let her live in such 'shitty and unhumane' circumstances. She also said that it's not her fault that every single place she lives at is bad.. Also she talked about how she could have lived off of her ex if he agreed to marry her, but luckily for him he didn't.
She told them that she can't save up enough money to pay a loan or rent a decent place, and she doesn't get why that is, because she worked at a ton of different workplaces, but she just can't seem to find one that is high paying, but you only have to work for maybe 4 hours. Apparently she is sick of working 8 hours a day, but wonders why she has money problems.
From what I understood by eavesdropping (wasn't hard, since she was shouting), her parents didn't agree to sell their house, become possibly homeless and moneyless to support their 33 year old little big princess, so she hung up on them crying uncontrollably with her last words to them being you're so heartless, how can you call yourselves my parents'. Then she stormed out of the apartment.
This is probably the end of this story, because she's finally moving out tomorrow, although she still hasn't found a new place.
Thanks again for reading!

2020.09.10 05:52 JCtitanic4154 A Very Normal HOI4 Game - Seeking Help and Ideas

Hello, recently I have come up with an idea with a Hearts of Iron IV mod. I have worked on several mods previously to little achievement in them. But I think I have found something I want to commit to. Its current work in progress title is "A Very Normal HOI4 Game" but I plan on probably changing it. Basically the whole basis of the mod is that is starts as the normal 1939 Blitzkrieg start date but soon things go really off the rails. The pre-game start changes starts with the First Vienna Award where the Czechs resist Hungarian demands leading to an armed invasion of Czechoslovakia instead of more of a direct occupation. The Czechs don't last more than two weeks with Tiso proclaiming Slovakia and basically everything ending the same as otl with the Prague Castle declaration and all still occurring. But the direct armed intervention that led to a few thousand casualties cased the general staff of the armed forces to remain connected in the "Oster Conspiracy." This leads us to the start date on August 1st, 1939 where you start with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and then provoke Poland. And a few days after Polish invasion begins the allies issue their ultimatum to have Germany back off and when it become apparent to the high command that he intends to go total war, they launch the coup. Hitler either is captured or escapes depending on player decisions when leading the coup. Either way, the war starts and the player must choose either to go with the nazis or go with the military. The military side has public support against them for the entire civil war but still have control of most of the army and generals. Leaving Hitler with the SS, SA, and loyalist factions of the Wehrmacht under the control of Keitel. White peace is effectively declared with the allies and world tension goes down. The Czechs also start a rebellion against the Germans, the military faction has an option to either ally with the Czechs or continue to fight them along with the Nazis. Army Group North under the leadership of Bock, who was left out of the conspiracy, becomes a military clique effectively and either has the option to continue the war with Poland but just with the 3rd and 4th armies or retreat to East Prussia until the civil war ends (It doesn't matter who you put in charge of these armies in game, it just happens anyway). For America FDR is assassinated in December, 1939 by a member of the German-American Bund, not sure who yet, maybe Yockey does it. But that spirals into a heated primary battle between Henry Wallace and John Nance Garner. If Henry Wallace gets the nomination and certain conditions are met Lindbergh may even run to become the Republican nominee and can possibly win depending if Wallace fucks it up with campaigning. I still need more time to think about the US though. Spain also ends up collapsing again without the support of Germany. Franco is unable to consolidate power and other generals start a power struggle which either leads into a peaceful transition from Franco to another party whether it be another general or monarchist restoration or the Spanish military dissolving into many different cliques and factions. Sort of a Spanish warring states period. Italy, with the loss of their northern neighbor attempts to consolidate power on the Balkans and Mediterranean on their own. Japan continues with the Sino-Japanese War which if victorious will lead to a Cold War or total war with the Soviet Union. I'm still trying to collect ideas but I have started modding already. Screenshots are down below of what I have so far. Unfortunately coloring is off for some reason so Germany is green despite me importing the base game color file. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you all have great days.

2020.09.06 16:18 CesarRomeroAr What is Google Crowdsource?

What is Google Crowdsource?
Google Crowdsource, also known as Crowdsource, Crowdsource by Google, Community Collaboration and Contributor by Google, is a crowdsourcing platform developed by Google and aimed at improving many of its services through the training of Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, with the help of volunteer users. This training, which Google points out as micro-tasks that should take no more than 5-10 seconds to complete, allows the AI to learn new skills and study a large amount of information that enhances its ability to be implemented in the various tools that the company offers (Google Translate, Maps, Fotos, Assistant, among other).

https://preview.redd.it/0x9tu15jojl51.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=51f1cc5cdb589325042aa8e5c17b25aeef55ccce
Crowdsource was developed and launched for the Android operating system in the official Google Play store, as well as in its web version, on August 29, 2016. This platform includes several short tasks that users can complete in order to sophisticate and enhance many of Google's services. These tasks include image tag verification, comment feeling evaluation and translation validation among other tasks. By completing these tasks, users provide Google with valuable data for algorithm training and service improvement. As users complete tasks, they earn achievements and recognitions that include statistics, credentials and certificates, as well as differentiated tracking of their progress by task in a User World Scoreboard (participation in this scoreboard is optional).
Tasks
At launch, the Crowdsource application presented users with 5 different tasks: image transcription, handwriting recognition, translation, translation validation and map translation validation. The latest version of the application includes 7 tasks in its mobile version and 8 in its web version.
The mobile mode of the project includes the following functions:
Smart Camera: It consists of a smart camera that detects objects and provides an overview of them. The user then has to tell the function whether the description given is correct or not.
Verification of image labels: The user must indicate if the label presented to him can be the one indicated or not for the photograph that is perceived in a random way in the chosen category.
Sentimental analysis: It presents the user with various reviews and comments so that he can classify them according to his opinion as "positive", "neutral" or "negative". Also, as an alternative, the user can skip a question if they are not sure and move on to the next one. These reviews by Crowdsource users help a variety of recommendation-based technologies that Google uses on platforms such as Google Maps, Google Play Store and YouTube.
Handwriting recognition: Handwriting recognition involves users reading handwritten words and transcribing them into text. As explained by Google, completing this task helps improve the handwriting feature of the Google Keyboard.
Translation and Validation of translations: Translation-related tasks (translation and translation validation) are only shown to users who have selected more than one language in which they are fluent. While map translation validation is no longer a task in Crowdsource, users can still complete translation and translation validation tasks. Translation presents the user with one of the languages in which they are fluent, and asks them to translate it into another language in which they are also fluent. Translation validation presents users with a list of translations submitted by other users, and asks them to categorize them as correct or incorrect. Both tasks help improve the translation capabilities of Google, especially in Google Translate, and any other Google application that has translated content, including Google Maps.
Image capture: This function allows you to take photos or upload them from the gallery and share them in open source for free use on the Internet with precise tags describing the content of the photo.
Google Crowdsource - Mobile Version
The web mode in turn provides the following functions:
Verification of image labels: Same function as in the mobile version. VIEW!
Image legend: Allows you to validate or invalidate image captions that may be linked to the photograph being displayed. VIEW!
Handwriting recognition: Same function as in the mobile version. VIEW!
Reference points: This function allows you to indicate whether the reference point indicated corresponds to the image presented. This task is designed to help ensure that businesses and landmarks are recognisable on applications such as Google Maps, Google Street View, etc. VIEW!
Facial expressions: It allows you to analyze human face expressions in YouTube videos and then tell the application what kind of expression is detected. VIEW!
Translation and Translation Validation: Same function as in the mobile version.
Assistance Tutor: It allows you to show the Google virtual assistant how people could speak to you in your language.
Google Crowdsource - Web Version
Achievements
Crowdsource has a "Achievements" section that shows the Statistics and Badges that the user gets by completing various tasks. Among these, the level at which the user is according to his contribution flow stands out. These range from Level 1 to Level 18.
Recently, a League Table was added that shows the progress of partners worldwide in each of the application's functions. VIEW!
Statistics
Crowdsource tracks the total user contributions to the project and displays them on a counter, as well as metrics that provide a balance of responses in line with overall community responses synthesized in a section called "Votes in favour" and "Accuracy" that shows the degree of accuracy or validity of user responses.
Badges
As users complete tasks, they also receive Badges. There are badges for each type of task, which denote progress through that particular task (such as translation validation), as well as badges for other milestones, such as completing a given task through a notification.
Languages
Crowdsource is currently available in the following languages: Afrikaans, Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, Assamese, Azerbaijani, Bahasa (Indonesia), Bahasa (Malay), Basque, Belarusian, Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Burmese, Catalan, Cebuano, Cherokee, Chichewa, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Corsican, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Dzongkha, English, Estonian, Esperanto, Finnish, French, French (Canada), Frisian, Galician, Georgian, German, Greek, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hausa, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Hindi, Hmong, Hungarian, Icelandic, Igbo, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Javanese, Kannada, Kazakh, Khmer, Kinyarawanda, Korean, Kurdish (Kurmanji), Kurdish (Sorani), Kirghiz, Lao, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Luxembourgish, Macedonian, Malagasy, Malayalam, Maltese, Maori, Marathi, Mongolian, Nepali, Norwegian, Oriya, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Romansh, Russian, Samoan, Scots Gaelic, Serbian (Cyrillic script), Serrano, Sesotho, Shona, Sicilian, Sindhi, Sinhala, Slovak, Slovenian, Somali, Spanish, Sundanese, Swahili, Swedish, Tajik, Tamazight, Tagalog/Filipino, Tamil, Tatar, Telugu, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Turkmen, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uyghur, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Welsh, Wolof, Xhosa, Yiddish, Yoruba and Zulu.

2020.09.03 22:30 JackStorm787 The German Confederation: Year 1 and Background

Greetings everyone, my name is Jubs and welcome to AOTR’s 4th Progress Report. Today, exactly a year since the last Progress Report on the German Empire we’ll be going back to the heart of Europe to discuss updates we have made since then. Aside from just changes to Germany since last August, this progress report will cover opens up depending on who the player chooses as their main party and if they choose to create a coalition. WIth the SPD and ZP the player has the option of either ruling the nation without a coalition, which removes the debuffs from the coalition spirit, but at the same time give themselves less access to long term benefits through the focus tree. The DDP, having been in power since 1929 and also having run an ineffective and stagnant coalition for the last few years
Before we get to the hefty lore section, I would like to extend a huge thanks to the entire development team and those behind the “Lore and Timeline Overhaul” we’ve been working on since February. None of what is featured in this PR would be possible without Nicol, Welsh, Hannah, Lextzo (Boomer), MrMano, Frilech, Darth Riki 01, and Grestin for his focus icon pack.. Be sure to give these guys the credits they deserve in the discord and in the comments. Now, onto the Progress Report.

The German Confederation in 1936

History and Lore (1848-1936)

With the Austrian Empire torn asunder by the Hungarian Revolution and the Prussians busy fighting a Polish Revolution, newly inaugurated President of France Louis Napoleon saw this as a perfect opportunity to restore his uncle’s conquests and declared war on the beleaguered German states. The unexpected invasion paired with the sheer strength of the revolutionaries forced the Prussians to concede defeat and cede the Rhineland to the French.
By the winter of 1852, the Prussians had adapted and recovered from the loss of the Rhineland, and their army was no longer burdened by the revolutions of old. Prussian Minister-President Otto Theodor von Manteuffel and his staff (most notably the future Chancellor Bismarck) had devised a scheme in which the other German states could be convinced to join Prussia in a war against the French to reconquer the Rhineland. By staging a false flag operation and claiming that French troops shot and killed a group of civilians, public outrage was at an all-time high. The civilians were fake, of course, but the general public didn’t know that. All across Germany, they rallied to strike back at the French menace, but the Prussian King stood firm. Manteuffel’s plan was to get the French to declare war on the Germans and not the other way around. Finally, the day came. The French puppet in the Rhine had been plagued by strikes for a while, but the supposed killing of the civilians by the French had caused the situation to escalate to such a degree that the French government began an investigation into the cause of the strikes. The “Wuppertal Report” as it came to be known placed the blame wholly on the Prussian government. While the false flag operation was their doing, the internal striking and paralyzation of the nation’s economy weren’t. Despite the clear signs, Napoleon’s hubris got the best of him and he declared war on the Prussians soon after.
The Franco-Prussian (and later Franco-German) War was a rout for the French. While they had been successful during the invasion in 1848, their success was mainly due to the lack of troops on the western front on the Prussian’s end. Now with the Prussians ready for an attack, the French suffered horrible losses and by the end of the year, the Rhineland had already been reconquered. The Germans only had to enter Alsace-Lorraine for the French government to realize the gravity of the situation and sue for peace. Napoleon III’s short-lived French Empire was soon crushed by both German arms and republican revolutionaries who toppled the government and they signed the Treaty of Frankfurt. This treaty forced the French to cede Alsace-Lorraine and the Rhineland to the German Empire. The treaty also forced the French to recognize the German Empire that consisted of the merger of the following states: Prussia, Austria, Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden, Hesse-Darmstadt, and the other smaller states in southern and central Germany.
This newly consolidated German Empire quickly rose to become the strongest nation on the European continent and became a worthy rival to the United Kingdom. What remained of Metternich’s Concert of Europe following the Revolutions of 1848 has now been destroyed by the Empire. From the 1860s through to the mid-1880s German politics were dominated by Chancellor Bismarck and the Prussians. Bismarck’s way of governing was similar to what we know him for in OTL, but to a lesser extent here. He still implemented state socialism and fomented alliances with countries as a master diplomat, but as Austria and Bavaria were co-equal members of the Empire, his kulturkampf policies would not be implemented to the same degree as we know today. Bismarck’s crowning jewel was the Berlin Pakt, a series of alliances that would eventually grow and become the Frankfurt Pakt.
In 1888 following the deaths of both Kaiser Wilhelm I and his son Friedrich III, Wilhelm II took the throne of an anxious and fearful nation. To top it all off, just a year later in 1889 a terrorist tried to assassinate Wilhelm II but missed by just a few centimeters. The assailant was captured and identified as a radical Boulangist—a follower of French President Georges Boulanger’s proto-fascistic ideology . Despite Wilhelm’s survival, the damage done to the monarchy was too much for the other states to handle. The other members of the Empire, led mainly by Austria and Bavaria, rallied together and demanded a restructuring of the Empire and its succession laws to prevent a crisis like the Year of the Three Kaisers again. The states all met in Frankfurt, the same place as the revolutionaries had almost four decades before, and came out of the meeting in 1891 with a new constitution and system of government all of them could agree on. The German Empire was no more, in its place rose the German Confederation. While structurally the confederation was the same, the monarch was to be elected by an electoral college of nobles from the various states. The first election was held the following year in 1892 and the victor was Rudolf of Austria. Crowned as Rudolf I, his first actions as Kaiser were to slow down the aggressive and expensive naval buildup his predecessor Wilhelm had started to counter the Royal Navy. Despite the slowdown, however, the Imperial Navy was still a formidable force only rivaled by the British and French.
The growing French presence in Morocco increased tensions between the Germans and the French multiple times during the early 1900s, but in 1911 things reached a critical point and the United Kingdom stepped in as a neutral mediator. The three convened in Paris where it was hoped France and Germany could reach an agreement and war could be averted. The Germans were more than happy to oblige and agreed to relinquish all their claims in the region. The French kept up a veneer of pleasantries and amiability at the meeting, but unbeknownst to the Germans, Georges Boulanger and his most trusted generals were planning a sneak attack against their unprepared foe. “Plan XVIII” as it later came to be known was headed by Joseph Joffre and Ferdinand Foch, two well respected French generals who despite their rank, had barely held a command before this. The plan entailed attacking the Germans through Alsace and overwhelming their forces in the region before moving further into the heart of Germany. How successful this plan would be was up to fate.
Just as the negotiations in Paris were wrapping up in November of 1911, Boulanger ordered the plan executed. French forces opened fire across the border and the Germans responded. In a twisted mirror of what had happened all those years ago in the Rhineland, the French claimed the Germans fired first and declared war on the Germans. While many, including France’s ally the United Kingdom, doubted the French claims, there was one country that stood by them: The Russian Empire. Tsar Nicholas II and his Stavka placed the full weight of Russia’s army behind the Entente and began invading German-aligned Poland and East Prussia. As the coldest parts of winter began to set in, the French advance halted while the Russians continued to push into Prussia. Once 1912 rolled around and winter thawed out into spring, the French advance continued. Soon they reached the mighty river Rhine. While a mighty victory indeed, the cost of the victory was kept hidden from the civilian populace as the sheer death toll was enough to make the harshest general shudder.
The drive to the Rhine was the costliest military offensive in French history and its effects on morale began to show as the years ticked on. By 1916 the Russian Empire was crippled by civil war and although legally they were still in a state of war with the Germans, both the Soviets and the White movement signed provisional treaties that ended the fighting. The White movement would eventually sign the Treaty of Tsaritsyn once the situation had calmed down in 1918 which gave the Germans control over vast swathes of Russian territory. Stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea and containing most of Russia’s coal and industry. On the western front things had become dire for the French. Having been pushed back to Alsace, Boulanger and his government issued a harrowing order: the infamous “Decimation Order”. The order was intended to eliminate the threat of mutiny, but all it did was sow discontent among the already exhausted soldiers. Watching as thousands of their brothers in arms were executed while the German war machine continued to march towards Alsace only intensified these feelings. There was one last trick up Boulanger’s sleeve, however. With the aid of their allies in Britain and scientists from Australia, the French had created armored monstrosities they called Chariots (Char in shorthand). These mobile pillboxes were terrifying to the few German soldiers unlucky to lay their eyes on them.
Despite the Decimation Order and the introduction of their Chars, the Germans continued to push onwards and eventually, they stepped foot into French territory for the first time in the war. The French populace began to panic and soon division spread throughout the country. Entire armies began to desert despite the threat of the dastardly Decimation Order while some simply formed their own armies with no allegiance. Workers in all the major cities began to go on strike and immobilized the war effort. It seemed all was lost when the politicians once loyal to Boulanger and his regime turned on him and rival governments were declared. Just as with Napoleon III’s empire, Boulanger’s regime was toppled by the Germans as anarchy spread throughout the country.
The Treaty of Verdun (negotiations could not be held in Paris as planned due to the complete anarchy that ruled the city) officially ended the Great War once and for all. The French government was forced to cede Corsica, Tunisia, and Gabon to Italy and the Germans gained sovereignty over Morocco and the crown jewel of the empire: Indochina. The Franco-German border was designated a demilitarized zone and the government had to pay the victors reparations equal to one-hundred million Francs.
Following the war, the Confederation entered what many consider the "German Golden Age" or the "Rudolfian Golden Age". With control over the resource-rich colony of Indochina and trade booming, the 1920s were a cultural phenomenon. The film industry and the arts exploded with many around the world eagerly awaiting the next Wiene or Lang film. As Germany soared and solidified itself as the new global hegemon, tensions between the United States and the United Kingdom boiled over in Nicaragua and the Great Atlantic War broke out. The war was relatively quick having lasted only three years, but the effects of 1929 still haunt people around the globe. The New York Stock Exchange crashed and with that, the US was crippled. The British also suffered a blow when anti-war socialists led a harrowing coup against the King's government. With assistance from the French, some of the Royal family was able to escape to their remaining colonies in Egypt and Africa while the Isles burned. The sudden collapse of the US economy and the remaining parts of the British Empire was met by the sudden death of Kaiser Rudolf and the start of another Imperial Election. This uncertainty was the beginning of the end for the German Golden Age and would set the stage for the coming years. The Electors crowned Rudolf's daughter Elisabeth Marie as Kaiserin and while many rejoiced at the thought of another Rudolfian-esque era, her reign was doomed from the start.

The Confederation In-Game and the First Year

The Politics Screen has not changed much from this teaser from back in April with the exception of new minster portraits and a new portrait for the Empress courtesy of MrMano. Speaking of minster portraits, here's a list of the German ministers (The Austrians will come later, don't worry). Heads of Government, Foreign Ministers, Economic Ministers, Interior Ministers, and the Defense Ministers.
As you press play and you begin to tinker away at getting your production and army in line, Germany will be struck with the final nail in the coffin: The final collapse of its economy known as "Black Friday" The "Economic Slump" spirit is replaced with this crippling spirit which soon affects the other members of the Frankfurt Pakt and other economically-aligned countries like China and Hungary.
With the economy in a freefall unlike anything seen before, unrest in the city of Cologne reaches a breaking point with a massive general strike paralyzing the city's factories and manufacturing industry. Here the player has two options: either send in the Army to help quell the massive strike, or let the Cologne Police deal with the matter themselves. Choosing to send in the Army allows the police to focus on investigating and soon they find the lead instigator. Choosing to let the local police handle it loses you a bit of manpower but you eventually arrive at the same result.
Neumann will be arrested and sent to Frankfurt in order to question him and find out exactly why and how the KPD was able to instigate such a crippling strike under both the Kaiserin and Mayor Adenaur's noses. Event seen here Once Neumann's interrogation begins, many of his answers to the strike seen obvious enough: the economic situation forced the workers to lash out at their awful conditions and they felt that a strike was the only way to get what they wanted. One mistake he makes, however, is that he lets slip something about the so-called "Red Kaiserin" and her support for the Deutschland Brigade during the Swedish intervention in the Finnish Civil War (The Swedish-Finnish War). Event seen here.
Shocked by the news, the police forwards this news to the Chancellor and to the Kaiserin herself. Within days, a response from Gessler's government is heard throughout the upper echelons of German government and society. Soon, the information is spread worldwide as many look on in horror. As shown earlier, the player, representing the Imperial Electors, has the option of either barring her from being considered an electable candidate or to show amnesty and allow her to be elected. Should she be barred, the player will be met with this event showing the two candidates for the crown as well as describing who they are: Friedrich of Prussia and Karl of Austria. Should the player give her amnesty, they will be met with this event instead.
No matter which Kaiser(in) is elected, the worldwide community will learn who was crowned through one of three news events (All three possible options shown here). Additionally, the portraits for the three Kaiser(in)s are shown here. Huge thanks to MrMano for the portraits and thanks to Hannah for the Elisabeth Marie source.

The Focus Tree

With the Cologne Scandal and the effects of Black Friday having rocked the nation and the Frankfurt Pakt, the economic recovery portion of the focus tree opens up. While at first the tree may seem extensive, each Kaiser is limited to one branch of the tree at a time.
Should you have elected Kaiser Friedrich you will have two options for recovery: the more conservative route (“A Protectionist Mindset) or the more liberal route (“Cut Regulatory Laws). Reelecting Elisabeth Marie grants you access to the liberal route as well as the socialist leaning path as an homage to her moniker as the “Red Kaiserin” (“State-Sponsored Public Works Projects”). Electing Kaiser Karl gives you the ability to choose from all three of the recovery paths, although as with the others you are limited to choosing just one path.
Foreign policy wise you’re locked to an option depending on who you chose to elect. Reelecting Elisabeth Marie locks you into strengthening the Frankfurt Pakt and prevents you from expanding it beyond the initial members and either Italy or Hungray. This, however, can be remedied by completing the “Reach out to the Benelux” focus in the Anti-USRB section of the European Foreign Policy tree which we will cover later. Electing either Karl or Friedrich locks you into expanding the Pakt. Before you get to expand the Pakt, however, you must reach out to Denmark and Norway and seek official rapprochement for the actions of the Kaiserin. This gives the Danish and Norwegian PlayeAI the option of either getting a guarantee from Germany in case Sweden declares war on them or outright joining the Frankfurt Pakt. Once that is complete the player can expand the Pakt to include friendly nations in the Pacific and an overall strengthening of the alliance, but not to the same level as Elisabeth Marie can.
As mentioned earlier, Elisabeth Marie can expand the Frankfurt Pakt to include either Italy or Hungray. The other two can as well as Germany must choose to side with one of the two Adriatic powers, but the cause and effects is to be shown off at a later date.
In 1937 after having stabilized the economy somewhat and given the nation time to cool off after the rocky start that was 1936, the election rolls around. With this, the election tree opens up and the player is allowed to elect from either the ruling DDP, the SPD, or the Zentrumspartei (ZP). The newly revamped election tree opens up depending on who the player chooses as their main party and if they choose to create a coalition. WIth the SPD and ZP the player has the option of either ruling the nation without a coalition, which removes the debuffs from the coalition spirit, but at the same time give themselves less access to long term benefits through the focus tree. The DDP, having been in power since 1929 and also having run an ineffective and stagnant coalition for the last few years, will be unable to shore up enough votes to have a majority government and must reach out to either the SDP or the ZP for help. Doing so will allow you to reduce the debuffs of the coalition spirit while also granting you the benefits of either coalition. While this may sound like the obvious path for many as it allows you to reduce the debuffs and gain the added benefits of extra focuses, the player will never be able to completely remove the coalition this way and will have less focuses than their socialist and conservative counterparts.
Lastly we come to the Armed Forces tree. While not as intuitive or dynamic as the other trees, this is a must if you plan on defeating the Entente in the Second Great War.
Here is the focus tree in its entirety and although the keen-eyed among you may have noticed that I failed to mention the anti-Russian, French, and British branch of the focus tree, I never said when exactly I was going to cover it.
Diving headfirst into the anti-Russian and anti-French sections of the tree, the player is able to build forts on the Pakt's eastern border as well as buildup their allied industry. When it comes to the French section, the player is able to learn from the mistakes and successes of the First Great War to crush France once and for all. The anti-British section has the player reach out to the Benelux and attempt to draw them into the Pakt in order to protect them from any British invasion as they seem the most obvious target to take out both the French and Germans. With this, the player is also able to inspire resistance in Ireland and expand the Evidenzbüro to ensure the safety of the homefront and to deter the British from any foreign escapades.

2020.09.03 22:23 neni1020 Entitled housemate kicks herself out of the apartment

EP looks at everything, I tell her about everything, and she says that she will take it right there and then, she goes on about how perfect it is for her, because she works a few streets away from here and she was living in the building next door, but got kicked out suddenly and rudely ( this was a big red flag, but I didn't notice, because she was really nice and respectful with me,so I just believed her)
So I tell the landlords, they are happy that someones moving in, and they write a contract with her, take the security deposit etc.

2020.09.02 23:32 kulmthestatusquo Postcollapse movie - The Turin Horse (2011) showing collapse is really boring

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9EVyN_TxIk

This Hungarian movie , made by Bela Tarr who is kind of well known in that neighborhood although this is his last movie to date (he made a few more movies but they are only known in Hungary), is set in the 19th century but it is actually a post-collapse movie.

The reference for Turin Horse is because Nietzsche was shocked about a horse being maltreated at the Italian city, and he tried to stop the horse owner from beating the animal. After taken away by the sponsor who invited the philosopher to the city, Nietzsche developed an insanity from which he did not recover. (There are several theories about why he developed insanity but I won't go in there today)
Not much happens in that movie, like most post apocalyptic movies. Order has broken down, and the father and daughter, who survive by planting potatoes and already have a very hardscrabble life, spend most of their time staring aimlessly to the outside as rumors of neighboring towns being destroyed for an unknown reason galore.

As violent windstorms rage on, a bunch of gypsies, trying to gain enough resources to sail to USA, loot the only waterwell in the father's land and offer the daughter to go with them. But the daughter refuses.

The father and daughter decide to leave the town with the old horse, who was acting erratically in the course of the movie. However, because of the wind, there was nowhere to go and they return to their house to die.

In the final sequence, as the lamps get extinguished, both the horse and the daughter refuse to eat anymore, and the father follows suit in the final scene.
There are lots of philosophies but they can easily be elided. The conversation is all in Hungarian but it can all be skipped as well.

It is just another movie showing post-collapse is exceedingly lonely and boring. I wonder why only post-communist countries tend to make movies like this ; perhaps they did experience collapse at least two times in their lives, during WW2 and 1989-91.

2020.09.02 14:05 Internsh1p Interesting characers/changes you've noticed so far?

Firstly I just wanna say that as someone with a visual impairment I can already see how the game can be used with my accesibility tools. I had a lot of issue playing CK2 without mods but this installment, so far, feels a lot easier on the eyes. I can see a lot of potential for map-makers to help with accessibility features as far as making some of the local areas stand out a bit more, but otherwise it's pretty good.
Another change I've noticed just playing the Hungarian campaign/start date- no more map painting. It could just be that I failed at the war score screen and didnt know really what I was doing, but it feels as though in CK3 you're going to be locked into a claim. WHen I finally did win the war with Bulgaria to take Pannonia, I was immediately the Kingdom of Pannonia, rather than a misshapen Hungary with borders more outside of Hungary than inside.
With regard to the new faith features, maybe I misunderstood.. but it seems to be the case that when playing with the Hungarian religion any amount of change to the doctrine required an insane amount of Piety. Making a small change would cost me more than overhauling the religion, rather than the individual cost of the doctrinal change. I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding this, but that is how it looks to be from my vantage point playing a pagan. Small change? Says it costs 450 faith but instead total comes out to almost 3000.
Anyone play around with faiths yet? I'd love to hear what you all have done since I assume (?) that the non-Abrahamics can also have heresies/doctrinal changes

2020.09.02 12:53 majinmattossj2 Brazilian Big12 series, Episode 8/12: Corinthians

Previous episodes: Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense, Grêmio, Botafogo, Atlético Mineiro, Internacional
In this series I will present each of the 12 Brazilian teams that together compose the "Big 12". My point is to make them more knowledgeable to you, since each one of these teams have their share of the Brazil national team success and of Brazilian club football accomplishments as a whole. I'll try to be as smooth, efficient and non-boring as I can. If the feedback is positive, I'll keep bringing more to this series. So ok, let's do this!
Method: I'll present the teams in a chronological order, from the oldest foundation (Flamengo-1895) to the latest one (São Paulo-1930). The order will be: Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense, Grêmio, Botafogo, Atlético Mineiro, Internacional, Corinthians, Santos, Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, São Paulo. How many of these have you heard of?
Extra clubs: Due to a high number of requests, I'll also present 3 teams who don't belong to the Big12, but are also considered big clubs in Brazil: Bahia, Athletico Paranaense and Coritiba. Welcome to the club!
Geographical reference: Before we start, I'd like to ask something very simple from you. I want you to keep in mind that these 12 teams are spread in 4 different States in Brazil. The club's State name is written below, next to the club's name. It has a direct link to Google Maps, so that you can check it out to make this experience more accurate.

Episode 8/12: Corinthians (State: São Paulo), founded in 1910

The kings of São Paulo and the team of the people (1910-1954)
Corinthians was founded in 1910 by a group of factory workers in São Paulo, inspired by Corinthian FC, an English team that was going on an excursion in Brazil. From the first moment of Corinthians foundation, their president stated that they would be the "team of the people, and that the people would make the team". It was a manifest against the aristocratic trend of only allowing rich and white people into football clubs.
In Brazilian football early days, there wasn't a national league until 1959, so the teams would play inside their own state, in the State Leagues. In this São Paulo State League Era, Corinthians rose from nothing to become the most victorious team inside the state, with 15 titles, notably leaving behind their rivals Palmeiras (12), São Paulo (8), Santos (4), and also traditional teams from the amateur era such as Paulistano (11). If there was a national league in this period, Corinthians would certainly be a serious title contender, along with Fluminense (from Rio de Janeiro state league) and their archrival, Palmeiras.
Highlights to Corinthians early-1950s decade, when they won 2 State Leagues (1951, 1952), 3 Rio-São Paulo Tournament (1950, 1953, 1954) and 1 Pequeña Copa del Mundo in Venezuela (1953).
Tournament Champion Runner-up 3rd place

1953 Rio-São Paulo* Corinthians Vasco São Paulo
1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo Corinthians Roma (Italy) Barcelona (Spain)
1954 Rio-São Paulo Corinthians Fluminense Palmeiras
Corinthians notably won, undefeated, the 1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo against Roma (Italy), Barcelona (Spain) and Caracas (Venezuela). Barcelona, of the Hungarian star Kubala, were the current Spanish and Latin Cup champions; Roma, 6th placed in the Serie A; and Caracas, the home guests. Corinthians won their 6 matches, as you can see below. The topscorers were Luizinho (Corinthians) and Kubala (Barcelona) with 5 goals each.
Tournament Match Goals
1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo Corinthians 1-0 Roma (Italy) Luizinho (1)
1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo Corinthians 3-2 Barcelona (Spain) Luizinho (2), Kubala (1), Moreno (1), Carbone (1)

1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo Corinthians 2-0 Caracas (Venezuela) Cláudio (2)
1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo Corinthians 3-1 Roma (Italy) Luizinho (2), Cláudio (1), Galle (1)
Later in 1958, Corinthians provided the Brazilian National Team with two players in the World Cup title campaign, notably the legendary goalkeeper Gylmar, starter in 1958 and 1962. He played 395 matches for Corinthians, before moving to Santos in 1961.
1954-1977: the drought and the Rivellino Era
In this period, Corinthians went through their longest title drought of their history, without winning a single trophy. Technically, they won the 1966 Rio-São Paulo Tournament, but it had to be shared with 3 other teams due to a lack of dates to end it.
Between 1965 and 1974, Rivellino (born 1946), a creation of Corinthians youth system, was the team's main star. He played 474 matches for Corinthians, scoring 141 goals, and represented his club in the 1970 and 1974 World Cups. He never managed to win the then prestigious State League title, or even the National League, reaching the State League final just once, in 1974, losing to their archrival Palmeiras. He was "found guilty" of losing the final and was released from the club, sold to Fluminense. You can see some of Rivellino magical skills in this amazing skills-only video (3mn08s video).
In this difficult era, Corinthians also counted with legendary star Garrincha in 1966. However, his form was already declining at the age of 32, and he only appeared in 13 matches, scoring 2 goals.
Curiously enough, Pelé played professionaly from 1956 to 1977, almost the exact time Corinthians went trophyless. When Pelé began to shine in football, he used to say that he was rejected in a Corinthians trial in 1954, and therefore cursed that "while I (Pelé) play football, Corinthians will never be champions again". Pelé retired on the 1st of October 1977, and 12 days later, on the 13th October 1977, Corinthians 23-year title drought was over, as they won the 1977 São Paulo State League, 1-0 against Ponte Preta, with a goal from Basilio, at minute 81.
1976: The Corinthians Invasion
A year before Corinthians drought was over, one of the biggest events in the history of Brazilian football took place, the Invasão Corinthiana. The 5th of December 1976, a one-match-only Brazilian League semi-final would happen in Rio de Janeiro, between the home guests Fluminense (of Rivellino, who left Corinthians in 1974) and Corinthians, from São Paulo, 450km away from Rio.
The hype was intense. Fluminense were the frank favorites: 10 of their starting 11 had already been capped to the Brazil NT, they were called the Tricolor Machine.
The Maracanã 146.000 capacity would be split half-half. 70.000 tickets were given to Corinthians by Fluminense, and they were sold out in less than 3 hours. Tens of thousands of Corinthianos started moving from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro 2 days before the match: by airplane, bus, car, motorcycle, bike, taxi, it didn't matter, the Rio-São Paulo highway was dominated by Corinthians supporters (pic). On Saturday 4th, one day before the match, the city and the Copacabana beach of Rio de Janeiro became a huge Corinthianos party. Hundreds and hundreds of black and white flags and shirts all over the city.
On the day of the match, the atmosphere inside the Maracanã was INTENSE (5mn video). More than ever, Corinthians needed to end that title drought. Inexplicably, Corinthians fanbase had their biggest growth during the 60s/70s title drought. That's why they say that only the Corinthians supporters know what it's like to be a Corinthiano, that's why they nicknamed themselves "the Sufferers". Because they are the legitimate team of the people.
The match started under a moderate rain, and the pitch wasn't at its best. Fluminense opened the score at '29, with this goal from Pintinho. Corinthians needed at least a goal to go to extratime, and found it at '29 with Russo, after a corner kick. The rain intensified, and the pitch turned into this horrible mud. Not much happened afterwards, and the match went to the penalty kicks. Corinthians GK Tobias saved Fluminense's 1st and 2nd p.k., while Corinthians scored all their 3 penalties, and Fluminense only 1 out of 3. Zé Maria then scored Corinthians 4th penalty and qualified his team to the 1976 Brazilian League final.
However, Corinthians lost the final 0-2 to Falcão's Internacional, playing away. But the epic Invasão Corinthiana of Rio de Janeiro would be forever remembered in the Brazilian football history - this very good 46mn documentary comes back to 1976 and also shows the 2000 (Rio de Janeiro) and 2012 (Japan) Club World Cup posterior invasions.
1977: the State League title and the end of the drought
In 1977, Corinthians 23-year title drought finally came to an end, after they won the State League title. They played 48 matches, with 30W-6D-12L, cumulating 55% of the points. In the big final, they beat Ponte Preta 1-0, with Basílio scoring this eternal goal at '81.
It was Corinthians' 16th State League title, while their rivals had 18 (Palmeiras), 13 (Santos) and 11 (São Paulo) at that point. So, even without winning a State League title for 23 years, Corinthians was still fighting for São Paulo state title record.
1982-84: Socrates and the Corinthians Democracy
In the middle of the Brazilian military dictatorship, Corinthians chose to wave a flag in favor of democracy. It all began in April 1982, with the nomination of a sociologist, Adilson, to the football director job. Adilson liked to listen to the players, and along with politicized players such as Sócrates, Wladimir, Casagrande and Zenon, decided to establish an innovative democracy inside the club.
Basically, every decision (contracts, inside rules, etc) that was to be taken would be decided by voting. From the president to the average worker, all had the same right to vote, and the same vote weight. For example, thanks to this voting system, married players didn't need to sleep in hotels before matches with the rest of the team anymore. They would also use the Corinthians kit to spread political opinions in favor of democracy--such as the sayings "Diretas Já" ("Direct voting Now") and "Eu quero votar para presidente" ("I want to vote for president").
In April 1984, the Amendment Proposal For Direct Voting was rejected by the Chamber of Deputies, which collaborated to the departure of Sócrates to the Italian Serie A (Fiorentina), and to the end of the Corinthians Democracy. This talented generation won the São Paulo State Leagues of 1982 and 1983, and reached the 1982 and 1984 Brazilian League semi-finals.
This notable team provided the charming Brazil of 1982 (5mn46s video) with Sócrates, who played 265 matches for Corinthians, scoring 172 goals between 1978 and 1984.
1990: the first Brazilian League title
After winning the 1988 State League title, Corinthians won their first Brazilian League title in 1990. Led by midfielder Neto to the knock-out stages, Corinthians defeated Atlético Mineiro in the quarter-finals. In the 1st leg, they did a 2-1 comeback, with both goals from Neto: the first with a header and the second shooting from inside the box. In the 2nd leg, a 0-0 tie put Corinthians in the semi-final stage against Bahia.
In the 1st leg of the semis, Bahia opened the scored, but Corinthians tied with an own goal. Neto scored the 2nd goal with his trademark style, the free-kick. In the 2nd leg, a 0-0 tie was enough to put Corinthians in the final.
In the final, a derby between Corinthians and the São Paulo of Zetti, Cafu, Leonardo, Raí and the coach Telê Santana (former 1982 Brazil coach).
In the 1st leg, Wilson Mano scored the only goal of the match at '4. Fabinho (Corinthians) almost scored the 2nd after this brilliant run and conclusion, saved by Zetti, and Ronaldo (Corinthians GK), fantastic as always, kept Corinthians goal secured with great saves. In the final 2nd leg, Corinthians scored the only goal of the match at '54, after a great one-two between Fabinho and Tupãzinho, with the latter scoring the goal, and securing Corinthians first Brazilian League title.
Ronaldo (GK) and Marcelo Djian (CB) were both elected to the League's Best XI.
Corinthians kept the good shape and won 2 more State Leagues (1995, 1997) and 1 Copa do Brasil undefeated (1995), as well as 2nd place in the 1994 Brazilian League, with a new generation led by Viola and their eventual big idol, Marcelinho Carioca.
1998-2000: National legacy, champions of the World and the Copa Libertadores trauma
Tournament Champion Runner-up 3rd place 4th place
1998 Brazilian League Corinthians Cruzeiro Santos Portuguesa
1999 State League Corinthians Palmeiras Santos São Paulo
1999 Brazilian League Corinthians Atlético Mineiro Vitória São Paulo
2000 Club World Cup Corinthians Vasco Necaxa (Mexico) Real Madrid (Spain)
Vampeta, Rincón, Marcelinho and Ricardinho. The high-level of this midfield make the hearing of their names sound like poetry. The best Corinthians of all-time counted with other monsters such as GK Dida, Paraguayan CB Gamarra, LB Kléber, and the FW duo Luizão and Edílson. 5 of these guys were with the Brazil NT in the 2002 World Cup.
In this period, Corinthians won the 1998 and 1999 Brazilian Leagues, the 2000 Club World Cup and the 1999 São Paulo State League.
Luxemburgo (eventual Real Madrid coach) was the man behind the creation of this superteam. In the 1998 Brazilian League, Corinthians qualified to the knock-out stages with the best campaign. They first sent Grêmio home in the quarter-finals; and then Santos in the semi-finals, after three exciting matches (4mn51s video) and this fine and decisive goal by Edilson at '57 of the 3rd semi-final match.
In the big final against Cruzeiro, Corinthians started badly on the 1st match (away), losing 0-2 at half-time, but recovered greatly with two goals and left with a 2-2 tie. The 2nd leg, at home, was a 1-1 tie, with Corinthians opening the score and Cruzeiro equalizing later. In the 3rd final match, at home, Corinthians won by 2-0, with the first goal by Edilson at '70 and the second goal by Marcelinho Carioca at '80. For the 2nd time, Corinthians were crowned Brazilian champions. Gamarra and Vampeta were elected to the League's Best XI, while Edílson won the Golden Ball and Marcelinho Carioca was the team's topscorer with 19 goals in 28 matches. Their coach Luxemburgo left Corinthians to command the Brazil NT, appointing his auxiliary Oswaldo de Oliveira as the new coach.
Corinthians 1999 season was a hell of a rollercoaster. Qualified to the big dream, the Copa Libertadores, the team was the same as 1998, and had the arrival of Dida and Luizão.
In May 1999, Corinthians were knocked-off of the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals by their archrival Palmeiras, 2-4 on the penalties, after two evenly derbies (0-2, 2-0).
Weeks later, in June 1999, Corinthians and Palmeiras, again, disputed the final of the State League. Corinthians won the 1st derby 3-0. At minute 75 of the 2nd leg, with 2-2 in the score and Corinthians' title secured, Corinthians' winger Edílson performed the biggest provocation in the history of Brazilian football, by doing kick-ups with the ball, provoking this huge, epic and funny struggle. The match ended, and Corinthians were crowned State champions.
At the end of the season, Corinthians dominated the 1999 Brazilian League. In the K.O stage, they beat Guarani in the quarter-finals, and then their city rival São Paulo in the semis (3-2, 2-1), after Dida epically saved two penalties from São Paulo idol Raí (former PSG): the first on his left side at '52, and the second on his right side at '92. Corinthians then won the 2nd leg 2-1 and qualified to the finals.
They would face Atlético Mineiro, and lost the 1st leg (away) 2-3. At home in the 2nd leg, Corinthians beat them 2-0 with 2 goals from Luizão, the first at '28 from a header, and the second at '59 from inside the box. The 3rd leg was an electrifying 0-0 tie, and Corinthians were declared back-to-back Brazilian League champions.
Dida, Rincón and Vampeta were elected to the League's Best XI, Marcelinho Carioca won the Golden Ball, and Luizão was the team's topscorer with 21 goals in 25 matches.
The 2000 FIFA Club World Cup title
In 2000, took place in Brazil the first edition of the Club World Cup, and Corinthians qualified as Brazilian champions.
Group A Points Goal difference
Corinthians 7 +4
Real Madrid (Spain) 7 +3
Al-Nassr (Saudi Arabia) 3 -3

Group B Points Goal difference

Manchester United (England) 4 0
South Melbourne (Australia) 0 -6
Before Real Madrid's match against Corinthians, the French centre-back Karembeu said he didn't know who Edilson (Corinthians number 10) was. In the match, Edilson humiliated him with this dismantling and shameful nutmeg, before scoring this painting of a goal. The match ended 2-2, with Edílson also scoring the other Corinthians goal.
This beautiful image is perfect to describe Karembeu's humiliating moment.
Corinthians would proceed to play against Vasco in the big final. 70.000 Corinthianos invaded Rio de Janeiro just like in 1976, expecting a great match against Vasco's dream team that had Romário, Edmundo and Juninho Pernambucano. After a 0-0 tie, it went to the penalties. Dida saved Gilberto's shot, and Marcelino Carioca only needed to score to end it, but he missed it. However, Edmundo lost Vasco's last penalty, and Corinthians were crowned Club World champions.
However, later that year, Corinthians met their archrivals Palmeiras once again in the Copa Libertadores, now in the semi-finals. After two crazy evenly derbies (4-3, 2-3), it went to the penalties, just like in 1999. And Marcelinho lost his one, getting Corinthians out of the tournament, and beginning a huge frustration and trauma of the Corinthianos for not having a continental title, while all their state rivals (Palmeiras, São Paulo and Santos) had.
2001-2010: Carlitos Tévez, the 2007 relegation, Ronaldo Nazário's last dance, and the Copa Libertadores trauma
The 2000s was a crazy decade for Corinthians.
They won 3 State League titles (2001, 2003, 2009), 1 Brazilian League (2005), 2 Copa do Brasil (2002, 2009) and 1 Rio-São Paulo (2002). But they were also relegated to the Brazilian League Serie B in 2007.
Highlights to their Galáticos 2005 team, led by Argentine stars Tévez and Mascherano, as well as Carlos Alberto (former Porto) and Nilmar (eventual Villareal), who together won the 2005 Brazilian League.
After their relegation to Serie B in 2007, the club rebuilt greatly under the president Andrés Sanchez.
He brought the legend Ronaldo Nazário in 2009, who led Corinthians to the 2009 State League title against Neymar's Santos and to the 2009 Copa do Brasil title against Internacional. Ronaldo scored 35 goals in 69 matches, with great highlights, notably this last-minute goal on his 1st match in a derby against Palmeiras and also this goal against Santos in the 2009 State League final. He was joined by left-back Roberto Carlos in 2010, before retiring in 2011.
But the Copa Libertadores trauma was still alive. The 30 million Corinthianos couldn't live with the jokes and suffering for not having a continental title.

Corinthians 2011-2012: National, Continental and World champions, the dream came true
The coach Tite almost lost his job after the ridiculous defeat to Tolima. But he stayed and focused on the 2011 Brazilian League.
Corinthians dominated the league, leading it for 27 rounds (out of 38). On the last round, they tied 0-0 against Palmeiras and secured their 5th Brazilian League title. However, sadly on this same day, the old idol Sócrates passed away, at the age of 57.
Corinthians had thus qualified to the 2012 Copa Libertadores, which they would brilliantly win undefeated (8W-6D), as well as their 2nd FIFA Club World Cup title.

Corinthians topped their group stage, placing 2nd overall in the cup. In the round of 16 they met Emelec (Ecuador), and held a 0-0 tie away in the 1st leg, before beating them 3-0 at home in the 2nd leg without much problems, except this dangerous chance and this ball in the post in Ecuador.
In the quarter-finals, the adversary was the Brazilian team, Vasco. The 1st leg was in Rio de Janeiro, a 0-0 tie, with this only big chance in Corinthians' favor. In the 2nd leg, Corinthians were pressing Vasco a lot, until the minute 62, when Vasco forward Diego Souza threw this incredible opportunity away. Had he scored, Corinthians would need 2 goals in 30 minutes. Corinthians kept pressing, until Paulinho scored the winning goal at '87.
In the semi-finals, the current Copa Libertadores champions, Santos, with Neymar, Ganso, Elano & co., would be a tough opponent. But, playing away, Corinthians' Sheik opened the score at '27 with this nice goal. Cássio made this good defense at '57, and this other one at '80. In the 2nd leg, Neymar opened the score for Santos at '35, but Danilo scored for Corinthians at '47, as the match ended 1-1, with Corinthians qualified to their 1st Copa Libertadores final.
In the big final against Riquelme's Boca Juniors (Argentina), who were chasing their 7th title, Corinthians would play the first match in Argentina. Boca opened the score at '72, but Romarinho equalized at '84, after Paulinho took the ball from Riquelme. Boca still had time to hit the post at '90. In the 2nd leg in São Paulo, Sheik opened the score at '53 and scored the 2nd at '71, after a juvenile mistake by Boca. At '92 the match was over, and Corinthians were crowned Copa Libertadores champions for the first time, and undefeated.
2012 Club World Cup - Corinthians 1-0 Chelsea
After beating Al-Ahly (Egypt) 1-0 in the semis, with this goal from Paolo Guerrero, Corinthians was ready to face Chelsea, the European champions, in the final. 30.000 Corinthianos invaded Japan for this unique moment.
Cássio (GK) saved Corinthians at least 4 times, notably with this one. But at '68, after a confusion inside the box, Paolo Guerrero scored the only goal of the match. At '84, Fernando Torres lost this 1on1 opportunity, brilliantly saved by Cássio. At '94, the match ended, and Corinthians were crowned Club World champions for the 2nd time in their history.

After these brilliant days, Corinthians remained on the top tier of Brazilian and South American football. They completed an International Treble in 2013 after winning the 2013 Recopa Sudamericana, won two more notable Brasileirão titles (2015, 2017), and also four more state leagues (2013, 2017, 2018, 2019).
